The Age of Neo-Slavery

In this groundbreaking historical expose, Douglas A. Blackmon brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history—when a cynical new form of slavery was resurrected from the ashes of the Civil War and re-imposed on hundreds of thousands of African-Americans until the dawn of World War II.

Under laws enacted specifically to intimidate blacks, tens of thousands of African Americans were arbitrarily arrested, hit with outrageous fines, and charged for the costs of their own arrests. With no means to pay these ostensible “debts,” prisoners were sold as forced laborers to coal mines, lumber camps, brickyards, railroads, quarries and farm plantations. Thousands of other African Americans were simply seized by southern landowners and compelled into years of involuntary servitude. Government officials leased falsely imprisoned blacks to small-town entrepreneurs, provincial farmers, and dozens of corporations—including U.S. Steel Corp.—looking for cheap and abundant labor. Armies of "free" black men labored without compensation, were repeatedly bought and sold, and were forced through beatings and physical torture to do the bidding of white masters for decades after the official abolition of American slavery.

The neoslavery system exploited legal loopholes and federal policies which discouraged prosecution of whites for continuing to hold black workers against their wills. As it poured millions of dollars into southern government treasuries, the new slavery also became a key instrument in the terrorization of African Americans seeking full participation in the U.S. political system.

Based on a vast record of original documents and personal narratives, SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME unearths the lost stories of slaves and their descendants who journeyed into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation and then back into the shadow of involuntary servitude. It also reveals the stories of those who fought unsuccessfully against the re-emergence of human labor trafficking, the modern companies that profited most from neoslavery, and the system’s final demise in the 1940s, partly due to fears of enemy propaganda about American racial abuse at the beginning of World War II.

SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME is a moving, sobering account of a little-known crime against African Americans, and the insidious legacy of racism that reverberates today.

THIS IS A BLOG NOT POSTED BY SIEBRA-THE BUTTERFLY LADY ADDRESSED TO ME

ROBERT POWELL

Robert,

While I don't doubt that you are an intellligent person, like Mr. Watley you commit logical fallacy against logical fallacy against Me, Sister Marta, Elijah Muhammad, and Minister Farrakhan, and then present them to me and other BIA members as facts. And you think I am so silly to believe your hypocritical ass after you put out a statement that Louis Farrakhan left the NOI for a brief period and later returned. Yeah, I can say the word "ass" since there is no RULE in Islam against using foul langugage. I am one month shy of being 28 years old and have been in the NOI since birth. My father just so happens to be a NOI minister. If you worked for the Muslims before you would know that there are many sects. And Elijah Muhammad gave clear instructions that NOI members are NOT following Al-Islam which is Middle Eastern Islam. He was presenting to us a NEW Islam. A Black Nationalist Islam. A CHANGE that we all can believe in. I am quite sure you have read my comment on Sister Irma's blog topic "Seek and You Will Find" as to why Elijah Muhammad referred to the whiteman as the devil. Louis Farrakhan was born Louis Walcott before changing his name to Louis X, as you know the X is used in place of our "slave name". Upon talking a pilgrimage (which is one of the five pillars of Islam) he changed his name to AbdulHaleem Farrakhan. The name Farrakhan means "fire will come" But he chose to refer to himself as Louis Farrakhan because that is the name he is professionally known to the nation and world as.

The more I read your blog comments the more you fit Marta's explanation of "virtuality":

1. You are lonely and sit at your computer doing vile things and trying to express your hurt in words. Many times you are unable to confront the issues and the internet offers instant "anonymity." Yes I can call it cowardly because if I try to respond as if it were real I cannot since it's an unseen and unknown enemy.

2. People like you create phony FAKE profiles all of the time--I particularly notice the ones with "name tags" are the most obvious.

3. People like you like to create chaos--they are filled with hatred and pain. Some have an EGO problem wherein they edge GOD out.

You see as long as I am a member of this site I will never forget that I am a Black Queen--and that by being a member of the Nation of Islam I am way ahead of the average Black American and the average Black in the Diaspora. It is always my privilege and pleasure to engage in discourse with my sisters & brothers in the NOI with some real k-n-o-w-l-e-d-g-e!

As an NOI member I was made aware of my blackness from a very early age, and that's what makes me pray for my dead brothers and sisters but fight like HELL for the salvation, liberation, and freedom of our living. I am not an ignorant person. You, Mr. Watley and other like-minded people who call my blogs UNREALl are. And since it seems like YOU have to be RIGHT all of the time, our President's first name is not spelled Baraka, it's Barack, OK?

Look, it doesn't make sense to continue this conversation with you, but like I said, if you don't have anything good to say about Me and Marta, keep it to yourself! And don't even think about writing back because I don't talk to people with "better than thou" attitudes!

Ok,

Siebra

P.S. DON'T WRITE BACK!!!

Thank you again Irma.
Siebra is closer to you in belief than AlIslaam.

I believe in the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, I believe in the First man, Adam and the first woman Howah, I believe in all the divine presentations of Leadership for Mankind in the prophets from Adam to Noah, to Moosa, to Ibraheem, to Suliman, to Isa ibn Maryam, to Mohamed ibn Abdullah(saw)--
I believe in all the divine presentations of Words from the Creator in the form of the Torah, Injeel, Zabor, and the last presentation Al Qur'an AlKareem.
I believe that in America, Elijah Muhammad was a SlaveAMerican man who had been *****ised by MasterAmericans, a wise man who was courageous enough to leave MasterandSlaveAmerican thought and to be inspired by Fard Mohamed and accepted AlQur'an and Sunnah of Mohamed-to attempt to develop Truth for himself, his family and his community. Elijah was a great Muslim leader, but Irma, Elijah taught me that the Universe belonged to the Muslim--not just a continent called africa, Fard was from a continent called asia.
This courage is shown in Our Leader President Baraka Hussein Obama and I believe that America and the World must CHANGE and accept CHANGE THAT WE CAN BELIEVE IN:
not old Slave and MasterAmerican thought that is heard on NBC, NewYorkTimes, WashingtonPost, AP, WallStreetJournal or now on BlackInAmerica.
My only interest in this site is that "you people" believe and follow Our Leader President Baraka Hussein Obama.

PUT UP? some money, some love, some words, some what?----
I apologize, I am ignorant to negroidism, I do not have any idea what you are trying to write, is it some vague parable, some sign language, a symbol?
I told you before that I have farmed, so I can dig holes, in fact I'll be digging holes probably next weekend for some new flowers in front and back---Give me an idea Irma Robinson---I'll listen........................

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING MY SISTER...we in the Black community need to know any and all things about our being BLACK IN AMERICA!!!!!!

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

P.S......ASSUMPTION begans with 'ass'

Only and "ASS" a right wing(extreme) supporter of or member of the Rush L. cult would not know nor care about our Black leader Minsiter Farrakhan's health. Believe that the Minsiter is the sole member of the NOI. That one has to be a person has to be a member of the NOI to believe in the words of tis great, great leader or like him refuse to give up their direct ties to the Mother Land, Africa(smile)

And, still hoping, praying, chanting that some for of our 'real world' manages to reach those on planet STUCK ON STUPID. NOT TO MENTION HOW THIS COMMENT OF YOURS r is an invasion of Siebra's right to privacy not to mention that endless need to show disrespect to members of the Black race who deserves much, much better ...but then we do have O.J. Simpson as a member now do we not?robert powell

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

Oh, by the way Mr, NOI expert robert powell while you talk about different NOI what make the major difference in the Islam point of view that you spout so often and the one that Sister Siebra and the NOI (in the US)DIFFERENT?

robert as I always ask you...PUT UP OR SHUT UP(smile)because this community is more about community to up lift our race than to spend our time trying to pick and choose who to insult, relate the White version of BLACK IN AMERICA(SMILE) AND LETS NOT FORGET ", BLACK POWER"to the robert powells out there...

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

and once again robert you are proving STUCK ON STUPID

and being stuck on stupid one will not allow and truths or reality thus remaining mindless and spineless. This is great because this gives me a way to teach African-centered BIA AND NOT THE cnn version...

If you were able to PUT UP , you would have put up information about the firse big business in America The Black Star Line...but as this is just a start in information about the American NOI,I will do what African-Americans do best-give you a second chance to PUT UP OR SHUT UP...just a less embarrasing way to say "I am trying to help you stop digging that hole you are digging"
