Al Sharpton calls for Arizona Sheriff Arpaio to Step Down

Jen Fad · Tuesday, April 7th 2009 at 8:27PM · 531 views
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. civil rights activist Al Sharpton weighed into a fight over an Arizona sheriff's immigration sweeps on Tuesday, accusing him of racially profiling Hispanics and urging him to step down. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has dispatched deputies into Hispanic communities in the Phoenix area, where they stop people and arrest anyone who cannot prove he or she is a legal U.S. resident.

Under a deal allowing them to enforce federal immigration laws, the deputies have arrested more than 1,500 people who they determined were in Arizona illegally, triggering street protests and condemnation from Latino activists who accuse him of racial profiling. "I am first calling for the resignation and or removal of Sheriff Arpaio ... harassment based on color is nothing short of racial profiling, which many of us ... helped to fight to make against the law," Sharpton told reporters.

U.S. Department of Justice officials recently launched an inquiry into Arpaio's activities. The U.S. House Judiciary Committee also held hearings last week about the federal program that allows for such enforcement tactics. "Arpaio needs to be confronted, he needs to be removed. ... We also need to suspend the law {287 g} that he is using. We must stand with our brown brothers and sisters," Sharpton said. Sharpton said he would travel to Arizona to make his case...

Sheriff Joe Arpaio Will Not Be Prosecuted For Racial Profiling Or Discrimination
{..."Neither Arpaio nor his officers will be prosecuted, punished, or sanctioned. If nonsystemic violations are found, nothing will happen. In fact, if systemic violations are found, the MCSO will be rewarded with more resources. That's right folks. The letter from the DOJ spells all of this out in plain language. Even Arpaio, whose office is the subject of the investigation, described the letter from the DOJ as "a nice, friendly letter" that he believes will have "a positive outcome..."

Of course not! Mozell are you a civil rights activist for Haitians or are you activist for all people regardless to their color? Maybe you need to join forces with Haitian actor Jimmy Jean-Louis and entertainer Wycliffe Jean. Blog about it (the situation in Florida) brother and let BIA know what's going on in Florida.

Sheriff Arpaio is using the law (287g) to racial profile Latinos and harass them for which that law wasn't created. Sheriff Arpaio is no different than the racist law enforcement officers during the Jim Crow era in the south. It wasn’t right then and it isn’t right now Brother Mozell. The issue is that the system (immigration) is broken and needs to be overhauled...besides that...anyone Lou Dobbs supports can't be too right regarding immigration. Alright nuff said for now...

...If you are illegal alien to these state go home and get your paper work and...

Brother Mozell apparently you haven't traveled outside of this country so I will rest my case for now brother.

Jen Fad Friday, April 10th 2009 at 4:54PM

Oh Mozell...this site is called Black In America.... I guess there is no room for any other discussions about other ethnic groups. I'll keep that in mind next time I decide to post something. (((LMBO)))

Your points are well taken Brother Mozell...that's why I like you, but I depended on sister Marta to do the fighting. (((smiles)))

…These are two separate issues...

You're right Brother Maxwell these are two separate issues. I think Sheriff Arpaio’s tactics are suspect as well and he needs to be ‘put in check’. The man has found a way to discriminate against Latinos legally using 287g.
{...287(g) is a tiny provision in federal immigration law that allows Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to take local police away from their mission of fighting crime, and pull them into the murky territory of targeting immigrants for arrest without suspicion of crime.
ICE described the 287(g) program as a public safety measure to target “criminal illegal aliens,” but its largest impact has been on law-abiding immigrant communities. Rather than focusing on serious crime, police resources are spent targeting day-laborers, corn-vendors and people with broken tail-lights...}

…We do have a process by which anyone can come to live in the US. Those that don't follow that process should not be allowed to stay, period...

This is not ideal Brother Maxwell for two reasons...#1 It just doesn't make sense to try and deport millions of immigrants and #2 the American immigration process is as outdated and archaic (as the American education system). Immigration just isn't working and needs overhauling one of the few things I agreed with John McCain on. I suggest one solution is to temporarily suspend visa lotteries that allow more people into the country…temporarily suspend this process in order to create a path for the immigrants (without criminal records) already in the country instead of deporting them back to their respective countries.

Brother Maxwell do you realize how many Deportation like jails have popped up all around the US at the American taxpayers’ expense. Many of these deportation jails are contracted to Republican Party cronies. Is this your solution to the undocumented immigrants in the US? Well brother this isn’t economical since the country is in a deep recession. I don't know why people want to come to the US anyway, because there are other places to go with better immigration friendly policies.

"Some Truths about Immigration, and Are Anti-Immigrant Groups Racist?"

The Pew Research Center’s Senior Demographer Jeffrey Passel and their senior writer D’Vera Cohn have put out a report contradicting some of the stereotyped white framing of Latino immigrants. Titled “A Portrait of Unauthorized Immigrants in the United States,” the report can be found by clicking link below
http://www.racismreview.com/blog/2009/04/1...

...They point out that in spite of anti-immigrant rhetoric coming from people obsessed with a vigorous, often racialized, framing of not-white immigrants (they almost never focus on white immigrants, documented of undocumented – why is that?) the numbers of these have actually not increased over the last few years, a decline actually predating the current Bush Depression...

...It would be significant if the anti-immigrant groups would actually recognize and openly accent this fact. One would think they would be delighted at the decline. Do they need to keep accenting increases and large numbers to get funding and members? The Pew Report also has interesting data on the relatively small percentages of the U.S. population that are involved when it comes to undocumented immigrants...

Journalists Who Revealed Sheriff Arpaio's Activities Win Pulitzer Prize
Series Reveals Negative Impact of Local Police Taking On Immigration Enforcement

April 20, 2009

Washington, D.C. - Today, reporters Ryan Gabrielson and Paul Giblin of the East Valley Tribune in Mesa, Arizona (Giblin is now with the Arizona Guardian) were awarded a Pulitzer Prize for their local reporting on Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Over the past several years, "Sheriff Joe" has transformed his police department into an immigration-enforcement agency -- running up costs, conducting large-scale neighborhood sweeps, and neglecting other crime-fighting activities. The award-winning series revealed the Sheriff's "focus on immigration enforcement and how it endangered investigation of violent crime and other aspects of public safety," says the Pulitzer website.

The Immigration Policy Center (IPC) congratulates Giblin and Gabrielson for this deserving acknowledgement. Their public service journalism serves as a model to reporters around the nation. Since the series published, the Sheriff has come under fire from local, state and federal lawmakers, and he is currently under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

IPC produced a fact check highlighting the details about Sheriff Arpaio and his controversial partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as reported in the East Valley Tribune.

The High Price of Being “America’s Toughest Sheriff”
Crime and Spending Soar in Maricopa County
Over the past year and a half, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona has transformed his police department into an immigration-enforcement agency, gaining international publicity in the process. Yet a growing number of elected officials, media outlets, and religious and civic leaders have criticized Sheriff Arpaio’s tactics and their impact on his community. In addition, two independent reports by the East Valley Tribune and the Goldwater Institute describe a Sheriff’s department where crime-solving is down and racial profiling and budget expenditures are way up.
In July 2008, the East Valley Tribune of metro-Phoenix ran a series of articles chronicling its investigation of the immigration-enforcement activities of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). The Tribune found:

Sheriff Arpaio’s immigration-enforcement crusade has resulted in a huge budget deficit for Maricopa County;

His tactics include large-scale neighborhood sweeps and traffic stops for minor violations as a means to arrest immigrants;

He has failed to arrest top smugglers and criminals (and, instead, swept up nearly 600 undocumented immigrants on charges of smuggling themselves);

MCSO response times to emergency calls increased;

MCSO arrest rates for non-immigration crimes dropped;

MCSO crimes were left un-investigated.
Building on the East Valley Tribune investigation, the conservative Goldwater Institute published Mission Unaccomplished: The Misplaced Priorities of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office on December 2, 2008, a piece that further documents how the MCSO, under the leadership of Sheriff Arpaio, has failed to serve and protect the community:
MCSO budget increasing quickly:

Since Fiscal Year 2001, the MCSO budget (excluding jails) has nearly doubled from $37 million to $72.5 million—approximately four times the rate of the county’s population growth.
Crime rates escalating:

According to FBI statistics, from 2004 to 2007 (excluding 2005, for which MCSO did not provide data), violent crimes increased nearly 70%, and homicides increased 166% in Maricopa County.

You know it is funny how if this sheriff was an active member of the Skin heads, kkk ,arian nation(and the public knew about this) there would be a whole new slant on what this sheriff is doing...am I correct?

I only say this because I doubt if anyone on this site would agree with Hitler when he did this same exact thing!!!! but, oh well the African-Americans only go above being treated like this about 50 years ago...HOW SOON WE FORGET...but as that saying goes,"THOSE WHO FORGET HISTORY ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT"????!!!!!!!!!???

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

Oh boy if the racist could use this post to see how even WE are backing a come back of JIM CROW, because this is exactly what this is minus the burning cross and the nooses...been there done that...

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

Now that I am really worked up please tell me what and why did we take a case of a young Black man all the way to the supreme court because the police asked him for identification for just being someplace where the police thought he should not be??????

If the sheriff wanted to arrest some illegals then he will find limitless of the out working in those hot feilds and living in those unhealthy camps or maybe laying out in the fields dying because they are not allowed to stop work and get a drink of water.

This has nothing to do with finding immigrants illegal or not and for the reasons I just gave you and this bull has already been before the supreme court,...The court said it is illegal. We have just gotten this to stop happening with Black college MALE students and now we are suppose to say we did something wrong for protecting our own children from this????!!!!???
