CALLING ALL MEMBERS: WOULD YOU SUPPORT A BLACK CONSERVATIVE FOR GOVERNOR?

The answer to the question in the headline will be known in a matter of months.

Last week Georgia’s Attorney General Thurbert Baker announced he is filing the papers to start raising money to become the first Black governor of the Peachtree State.

However, Baker has at least three major factors working against him. Many African Americans view him as a person who has spent most of his career putting Blacks in jail rather than working to keep them out.

He also angered many Blacks last year when he opposed the release of Genarlow Wilson - a young Black man serving a 10-year mandatory prison sentence because he had consensual s*x with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17. Wilson was nevertheless released.

Baker also supported the Voter ID law pushed through the Georgia legislature by Republicans. Most civil rights leaders considered that law racist arguing it made it more difficult for poor and elderly Blacks to register to vote.

Nevertheless, Baker could garner enough votes from Georgia’s conservative whites to win the governor’s race. He has already won three statewide races for attorney general.

By passing the insult if asked a question like this...I woold then let it be known that one's vote is private. "I" believe each person should research each person they vote for in an agressive educational manner and not just depend on the words of others to add to one's own ignorance(prejudices) as a voting ritual/ right.
