ruling, the NAACP has launched a major effort to force authorities to re-open the case of Troy Anthony Davis and prevent his pending execution. Davis is a 40-year-old Black man who has been languishing in prison since his conviction for allegedly killing a white Savannah, Georgia police officer in 1991.

Reopening the case has become a major cause for several civil and human rights groups who charge Davis is a victim of racist Southern justice. They point out that no physical evidence links Davis to the shooting and seven of the original nine witnesses against him have either recanted or contradicted their testimony. Some of those witnesses say they were coerced by police into implicating Davis.

The NAACP’s efforts were aided two weeks ago when the U.S. Supreme Court stopped the execution of Davis until September when it will consider a petition on whether or not to grant Davis “habeas corpus.” Meanwhile, the nation’s largest civil rights organization along with local religious and civic leaders delivered over 60,000 signed petitions to the Chatham County, Georgia district attorney last week urging him to re-open the case.

Individuals can aid Davis by purchasing a $25 “IAMTROY.COM” t-shirt from the NAACP at You can, when you donate $25 or more to the NAACP.
