The Tendency to Exaggerate Negative News Concerning Blacks

The Tendency to Exaggerate Negative News Concerning Blacks

Some good news emerged from Haiti last week. The predominantly Black and poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere appeared to be making great strides in conquering its AIDS epidemic. However, the surprisingly good news from a nation beset by poverty, political instability and violence was barely noted in major American media... The original bad news about AIDS in Haiti was exaggerated and overstated. Back in the mid-1980s, “experts” were predicting that because of Haiti’s poverty and the widespread HIV/AIDS infection rate, nearly a third of the nation’s population would be wiped out by the year 2000. Well, the worst-case scenario never happened...

What happened in Haiti reflects a tendency common in Western media, particularly in the United States: If it is negative or has a stigma attached to it and involves Black people, it tends to be reported in an exaggerated manner.
Even here in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control, the HIV/AIDS infection rate has declined for virtually every segment of the population except for young Black homos*xual males. But you virtually never hear the good news reported. Instead, we have recently been bombarded with stories about Black women being HIV infected at 14 times the rate of white women.

That figure may be true but when it is taken out of the overall context, it easily leads to distortion and misunderstanding. For example, did you know that the HIV/AIDS infection rate for WHITE WOMEN is nearly 19 TIMES HIGHER than that for ASIAN AMERICAN WOMEN? But the infection rate for Asian women is so low that making the comparison, while true, creates a distortion and false impression. The same applies when one makes distorted comparisons regarding Black women.

I have long suspected that a lot of the reporting regarding negative news, ailments and stigmas are not done for our benefit but instead to make whites feel better about themselves. It is almost as if the major media is saying to white America: “Things in this country and in your personal lives may not going as well as you would like; but look at the Blacks, things are even worse for them. You should feel superior.”
I am not asking you to agree with me. But please carefully read and observe negative news report and see if you do not discover that major news organizations can spin virtually any news development in a way which stigmatizes or degrades African Americans?

Brother Mozell I thought you would like this post.

Sister Irma,
I have and will continue to say it... I love America, but the American media needs to be censored. Mainly because other countries listen to American media people and listening to them taints their views of Blacks in America.

Brother Clark,
Even President Obama has been tainted by the media when it comes to Black people. Where did he get the notion that our kids play too much Xbox? Anyway I scrutinize the America media with a fine tooth comb.

Sister Irma,
No one is downing President Obama over the Xbox statement. We just want to know what gave him that notion that Black kids sit around playing games as opposed to other stuff. I guess it's better that he said Xbox instead of B-ball. (((LMBO)))

Jen, for me, any news that we get over our main stream media about Haiti is a great step forward. So far the only news I have ever seen on TV coming from this country is about them killing each other in some kind of civil war or other.

We in our community know what and why this is, but if we look at this as at last we are getting some news from Haiti this is great; because those of us bloggers are slowly, but surely forcing our topics onto the main stream media...

We know that it takes us working harder than anyone else to get where they are now don't we...but we have the best weapon now, it is called a Black president therefire slowly but surely getting our government to see it his(our)way.RIGHTmy sister(smile) so you just keep these coming so we can continue to keep this internet fire burning until it gets to hot to be ignored...YOU GO GIRL!!!!!(((hugs & kisses)))

Because, someone in the Gay community can take a lot of what 'we' say and apply it to their minority position , this may be why they believe that they are in the right when they talk about Dr. M. L. king...

I am the first to say that this is false and actually demeaning to the Civil Right's movement. I would have to admit that using this movement is a great argument, and not just for the Gays, supporters of the illegal immigrants used this a lot during the presidential campaign as they tend to do ever ytime the Federal government makes a move to make our southern borders with Mexico stronger and more secure!!!

Sister Jen, I could not agree with you more. And, networks like Fox needs to have their liscense taken from them until they stop using FAIR AND BALANCED as an ad and as their mission statement.(smile)

YES WE CAN...and this is why Al Sharpton is working so hard to get this done in N.Y. state. We must continue to watch his back. O.K?!?

And, because we will try to down our president over the Xbox statement what are we saying, Black children can not afford them, but White children can afford to buy the best sound systems to play their rap music...this could very well help play into playing this race game about all Black steal and we are too stupid to be able to know how to operate an Xbox, MAYBE?????????????????? (I am not smiling)

To better explain my take on this issue. I am at the point that any thing "I" see as a negative / critizism about our president, especially, from our Black community is just giving the Republican right-wing a better chance to go out in full force against Mr. Obama using us as their proof that our president is not good for this position and will jump at the chance to use it in 2010.

When it comes to those racist right-wingers, I will admit, I am parnoid big time(smile)And, because all ot these Republicans are White, I also must admit that "I" am basing this way of logic on skin color alone ...LOL
