THE INTELLECTUAL DISHONESTY OF PAT BUCHANAN

THE INTELLECTUAL DISHONESTY OF PAT BUCHANAN

IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE NEWS COVERAGE, PLEASE TAKE TIME TO REVIEW THIS.

There's much to be said about the shocking display of racism exhibited by Pat Buchanan on MSNBC over the past few days, but let's take a look at the accuracy and relevance of the three of the claims he made yesterday on Rachel Maddow's show.

Buchanan made the claim while attempting to explain why 108 of 110 Supreme Court justices have been white. As you'll see, he's every bit as intellectually dishonest as he is racist.

Buchanan claimed: White men were 100% of people who died at Gettysburg and Vicksburg

In the strictest sense, this claim is not true -- at least one black solider was killed at Gettysburg. But even though the claim is nearly true, it's intellectually dishonest to claim that it is relevant.

The argument offered by Buchanan is that African-Americans sat on the sidelines during the Civil War. The reality, however, is that by the end of the war, 10% of the Union army was black. 200,000 Union soldiers were black and 38,000 died. Moreover, at the onset of the war, much of the African-American population was enslaved.

Buchanan's claim is a attempt to claim moral superiority for whites, but the flip-side of his claim undercuts its absurdity: were it not for racist whites (like Buchanan, who undoubtedly would have sided with the Confederacy), we would never have had a civil war in the first place.

Buchanan claimed: White men were close to 100% of the people who died at Normandy

If you do a Google search, you will find Buchanan's claim is wrong. Not only did 2,000 African-Americans storm the beaches of Normandy, but 1.2 million blacks served in World War II. Moreover, it's important to remember that during this time, black soldiers were segregated from white. So even if Buchanan's claim were true, the reason would have been traceable to institutionalized racism, not the moral superiority of white people.

Starting with the Korean War, the U.S. Government began tracking deaths by race. Those numbers also refute Buchanan's general claim: in the Korean War, whites comprised 80% of the war dead. In Vietnam, it was 86%. In the first Gulf War it was 76%. So Buchanan's 100% claim just doesn't add up.

Buchanan claimed: This has been a country built, basically, by white folks

Buchanan primarily based this assertion on the above two claims plus the obviously true claim that the authors of the Constitution and the signers of the Declaration of Independence were white men.

Aside from the intellectual dishonesty of his military claims, Buchanan ignores the massive contributions of non-whites to America's development. He offers no recognition to the slaves whose labor was essential for such a long period of time and he fails to address contributions made by other immigrant groups such as Chinese-Americans who helped build the rail system, or Latinos who are an important part of the agricultural economy today.

Perhaps the real problem with Pat Buchanan's narrative of America is that he views everything through a racial and ethnic filter. We're all in this thing together, and the last thing we need is to exacerbate the racial and ethnic divisions in America. Rejecting the anger and hatred and lies at the heart of Pat Buchanan's world view won't magically those divisions, but it sure would be a major step in the right direction.

This post isn't intended to be an exhaustive refutation of Buchanan's intellectual dishonesty, but a reader reminded me of an important point that warrants this update: it would be impossible to do conduct an honest and accurate history of America without recognizing the brutal treatment of Black and Native Americans.

RIGHT ON! "Intellectually dishonest" is putting it NICELY. Buchanan lost me as soon as he digressed on the "African-Americans sitting on the sidelines during the Civil War" argument. Either he failed American History, is terribly uninformed on blacks' involvement in Civil War, or just plain suffering from an acute case of "racism."

People like Pat spew inaccuracies all the time to make them appear to have greater intellect, yet only prove their own degree of ignorance. Unfortunately, there are those who are just as ignorant and gravitate to those like-minded individuals I am still waiting for those demonstrations of real intelligence.

Sister Siebra, thank you very much for this report on Pat B.but,I believe that Pat is the only remaining open bigot on msnbc and acutally we need more Pat B.s for example,

This man offers a perfect door to racism and racist polticans running for presidents as he did ,still!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember how Rachael Maddow put him in his place about Affirmative Acton, before she became an anchor...she asked him how in the hell did he believe that so many females of her color get to be before the cable news cameras if not for AA? He shut up quick.(smile)Pat believes the president to be a racist because he choose that racist Judge Sonia Sotomajor!

But, to msnbc's credit they did honor those complaints about their openly racist anchor, Tucker Calrson and fired him!!!!You now can see him and his famous bow tie as a guest over on FOX!!! carlson had a habit of claiming satellite probles as he blocked out many of the Obama supporters while intervewing them on his daily program...the Ed Show now has tken up that slack and so has Rachael's program...It now seem the sole purpose of msnbc is to distroy fox by way of daily discrediting all of theirprograms, program anchors and their guest as their guest are usually members of the FOX's staff and fired politicians or they left the Bush administration as his ship was sinking.

Rachael maddow is one person if the racial bigots and some right-wing political leaders could get away with it they would tar and feather her then hang her on the nearest tree. Rachael is openly gay, and I believe a Jew-or the KKK calls her a Jew...and the last place a racist or a Republican right-winger needs to be is on her program.(smile)

again thanks for this post, I await more(smile)

robert, a very great comment about people still being the same...I remember during a debate between Obama and Hillary, Obama said how he hoped the Clinton's had CHANGED(and said it looking straight at Hillary, but very few of know what he was talking about if we even watched the debate...

The Clintons are still racist and are still just as open about it as Pat is but we have those Stuck on Stupid blinders on. We did not see the Clintons in all of those deep southern all White small towns wher people just like them and Pat still angry over intergration and the grandfather clause Jim Crow law being over turned which has lead a person who took the skin color of his father and not his White mother to have the nerve to be running for presidsident. Why did the Clintons never do any sound bites in those ALL WHITE CHURCHES????THIS ALSO WENT RIGHT OVER OUR HEADS AS WE HAD THOSE SOS BLINDERS ON.LOL!!!!

A person with the name of Barack Hussein Obama who for the past 25 years been attending a Black church(notice how you never saw the Clintons in a White church??!!?NO???)An INTERGRATED CHURCH that has the nerves to do just like the NOI teaching Black unity and Black pride...

And, this robert is why and how i can totally understand your comment...What a waste of time Black social networking is in allowing the Black community to talk to each other and not talk "AT" each other...what do we pay our cable bills each month if we want to be our own EXPERTS on BIA and not the White majorit yanchors and their guest...how dare sister Siebra do this(smile)

but, do not stop now my sister in arms against racism and bigotry...like the Pat B.s the same as the roberts of the world need an outlet/platform from which to speak(smile)

Clark, I believe it is good for us to talk about Pat,who knows maybe some day theri will be enough and often enough complaints coming in for us to force anchors of color coming in on tv.

Personally, Pat is no where as demeaning to us than us being limited to only playng the clowns for laugh the only place on tv we can get more than a few seconds of camera time!!!!!I do watch progrms that Pat B. is on but never any of those many, many "comedy" programs or as I call them...morden day vaduvill (or how ever it is spelled minus the black faces!!!!

robert when sister Siebra gets on to your knowing what buttons to push on her to get a reaction, you will be forced to leave her alone.

There has always to be 'another' side of any issue...lets all take a deep breath(smile)
