President Obama addresses the "Media Frenzy" over his Remarks: That's an Understatement ...make that Circus!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama backed down on Friday from a statement that police had "acted stupidly" in arresting a black scholar in a racially charged case that was rapidly becoming a distraction for Obama. The president made a surprise appearance in the White House press briefing room shortly after he spoke by phone to Cambridge, Massachusetts, police Sgt. James Crowley, who had arrested Henry Louis Gates, a prominent scholar of African-American studies at Harvard, last week.

Crowley suggested Obama invite him and Gates, to the White House for a peace-making beer, and a plan was in the works to do so, Obama said. Obama later called Gates, had a positive discussion, told him about his phone call with Crowley and invited him to join Crowley at the White House in the near future, the White House said. The case quickly became a media frenzy, with Cambridge police in an uproar, Gates accusing Crowley of racist behavior and threatening a lawsuit.

Obama said he hoped the event would end up being a "teachable moment, where all of us instead of pumping up the volume spend a little more time listening to each other" and improve race relations "instead of flinging accusations." "Lord knows we need it right now -- because over the last two days as we've discussed this issue, I don't know if you've noticed, but nobody has been paying much attention to health care," he said.

{And as quickly as it began... It is Over... the boys will sit down with a beer. I wish women could make up as peaceful as this!! (((Lol))) Way to go President Obama & I applaud you for not allowing the American media to continue this "Race Baiting Media Circus". The American Press God help you ALL.}

Isn't this obvious how a situation can be flare with the smallest spark. If only Gates and the officer could of just been a lot more respectful of each other, and if also the neighbor who called the police in the first place would have known " his own neighbor. "

Sister Irma,
I remember Rodney King and what he said. Everyone made fun of him for saying it. I don't think the issue of getting along is the fault of Black people. The cop ( and others who abuse their authoriy) are the real reasons we can't have peace. They simply go too far to prove to others who has the power. Real power is knowing how and when to use it.

..."And this is the wost possible outcome for the race-baiters and the racist right. If out of this can come a dialog and an understanding, the image of these three together will do more to undercut all the racist activity of the Limbaughs, Hannitys and their lackeys"...

Brother Maxwell you are so right on this. It is my hope that we can find out what the real reason was for the cop to arrest Mr. Gates in order for us to get some real legislation on the table to deal with racial profiling or abuse of authority.

Sister Irma,
I can't convince you...but what I do know is that President Obama would be a great mediator for both sides where meaning dialogue can be facilitated. Who knows, this sit down could actually be the beginning of real change between mainstream America and minorities. Let's wait and see.

Brother Maxwell,
What do you propose that we do about the fight to end racial profiling of minorities (Blacks, Latinos, etc)?

If WE can say that the right-wing has our president running with his tail tucked in and that policeman is not only running Dr Gates' house, he is now giving 'orders' to our president? Why then would I be the odd man out and say this is not only aLIE, but it is unreal and as it sounds like it came right out of the mouths of Limbaugh, Hannity and O'reilly at the same time, I will not even take this serious...

Now, why does a person who breaks the law continue to break the law? 1. they do not get caught. 2. They get caught and is not punished for the crime that the law knows he-she has commited. And, the next step is like governor Palin, right on to millionaire land. book deals, movies, t.v. movies and maybe even a tv reality show or a computer game...

And, as humans tend to do the "monkey see, monkey do" especially when those three monkeys are the ones who:see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil...this is why I chant(pray) that Dr. Gates files a law suit if only to protect "me" from the police department...I also chant (pray) that unlike me, you do notl ive in a small red neck town as I do where young Black men get drug to death by a truck as in the place where Ilive.

NO, I do not live in the deep south, I live 35 miles north of Sacramento, Ca.!!!!And, where I live is much less racist as it is when one gets even closer to Sac.!!!

Oh, does anyone remember Rodney King sayiing "Can't we all get along"? Now how many years ago was this?

Does anyone watch that program that is on each week about those INNOCENT bLACK MEN NOW GETTING OUT OF PRISON AFTER YEARS AND YEARS OF, g-u-e-s-s,WHAT?iF ANY ONE SAYS, THE SAME THING HAPPENING TO THEM AS HAPPENED TO DR. GATES, YOU ARE SO CORRECT!!!!!

Dna is getting them another day in court,I do not believe that our president can even convince the republicans that he is not an angry man...now don't froget the reason rush Limbauga gave for our president having this chip on his should and tis beef with America...rush says it is because he is Black!!!!Now back to having beer at the white house is going to put an end to racism?????

I THINK I WILL RETRACT MY STATEMENT ABOUT WE AS A RACE IS not POWERLESS!!!!!Hopeless and worthless...

Let us say, did I not hear this same song and dance that racism has ended because of our Black president right after he was elected!!!!

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

Jen, you do not have to convince me that our president is for ALL "SIDES"...the problem is taht far too, too many of 'the all sides' are in denial of this when the right-wing says that we are to over look any and all things our president is saying and is doing under their ordeers...example,

raise your hands if you have been calling and emailing and writting letters to back our president on his health care reform ar are we just doing like the Republican right-wing and just pointing finger and complaining?!?(smile)

I could be wrong but I do believing that our president has been"... a great mediator for both side the whole of his life and even more so as an adult in his endless quest for equality under the laws of our lands(thus maybe becoming a Constitution lawyer?)..."that is if we over look he says he is Black and not half Black and half White(smile)
