Michael Steele: Birth Certificate Conspiracy Is An "Unnecessary Distraction"

For the first time, RNC chair Michael Steele is sharply criticizing the birthers, condemning the movement is an "unnecessary distraction," reaffirming that the president is a "U.S. citizen," and stressing that it's time to move past debating Obama's "birth certificate."

Steele hadn’t criticized birtherism before, his spokesperson says. His decision to do so now suggests that he recognizes that the party needs to put the birther controversy behind it at a time when some Republican officials have flirted openly with the cause advocated by this small but growing fringe.

This statement coming from the GOP’s public face and chief operative is probably the most direct condemnation of birtherism yet by a top party official. His willingness to risk the wrath of the bithers, not to mention some of the party’s more strident voices, suggests he’s aware of the damage they’re doing to the GOP, by allowing Dems to paint the party as captive to intolerants and as more interested in discussing crackpot conspiracy theories than in debating real issues.

..."They’re like suicide bombers; so desperate that they are willing to destroy themselves to destroy Obama"...

Brother Clark,
So true in what you have stated. The "birthers" remind me of Spiderman 3 when the rival journalist/photographer was willing to destroy himself to maintain the evil Black spiderman suit. These guys are obssessed with bringing President Obama down at all costs, but I am hoping that we here and other Americans will continue to make our voices one so that the "powers that be" will know that we aren't going to take it.

Jen, did Steele make this speech before or after ALL of the Republicans cast votes agreenig that our president was born in onr 50th state?!?

How many new black voters do you believe Steele has brought to the Republican party after this racist lie that he helped to promote up until now after it is not needed?Oh, Lou dobbs just might have him come into the same space as he in his radio program room as I am sure he is not welcome over at FOX or Limbaugh's(smile)
