ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A former Louisiana congressman accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes was convicted in federal court Wednesday in a case in which agents famously found $90,000 stashed in his freezer. William Jefferson, a Democrat who had represented parts of New Orleans for almost 20 years, was stoic as the verdict was read and had little to say afterward. Asked how he was doing, he said, "I'm holding up."

Prosecutors contended Jefferson accepted more than $400,000 in bribes and sought millions more in exchange for brokering business deals in Africa. After a two-month trial, jurors took five days to convict him on 11 of 16 counts that also included racketeering and money laundering. He was acquitted on the other five. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Lytle said Jefferson could face more than 20 years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines.

Jefferson had been under investigation since March 2005. In August that year, FBI agents searched his Washington home and found the cash in his freezer, wrapped in foil and hidden in boxes of frozen pie crust. Prosecutors said he had planned to use the money to pay a bribe to the then-vice president of Nigeria to secure a multimillion dollar telecommunications deal there, an accusation Jefferson denied...

U.S. Attorney Dana Boente said after the verdict that "no person, not even a congressman, is above the law. Ninety thousand dollars in a freezer is not a gray area. It's a violation."
The defense argued that Jefferson was acting as a private business consultant in brokering the deals and that his actions did not constitute bribery under federal law. Defense lawyer Robert Trout said he will appeal...

..."Yeah, Jefferson was caught being not too smart. If he had put that money in his "campaign fund" instead of his freezer like all the others do it would not have been an issue"...

I think he was relying on advice from his Nigerian partners who do the same... put money in their houses, but I think he should have known better!!

USAAid, EuropeanAid and UN Aid presently go to corrupt leadership established by post colonial policies in Africa. These European governmental agencies know that this aid rarely helps African people and private African business but always is used by authoritarian African regimes; to bribe, murder and maintain lawlessness.
Our BIA congressman jefferson-was helping BIA businessmen/women and African businessmen/women go around the corrupt aid programs and tyranical governments and develop a purely African Bakshish business model.
This BIA descentant of Thomas Jefferson is being immorally targeted.

I do chant (pray)that this is one more Black male that has learned about how he can not do as the White man does.

I also hope that his prison sentence serves as a model for our Black males about how the White man will get a slap on the hand for violating the laws while the Black male will get their whole hand cut off for commiting the same crime...

...also Clark these people are not Black. Jefferson was convicted for being stupid more than any thing else, because he has been in politics far too long for this stunt as politicians face with being found out what skelatons are hiding in their closet with each and every election times...what do you think(smile)

Brother Clark, "I" do believe with msnbc and other networks seeing how they are being out done in reporting the names and amounts of lobby money being handed out to buy these votes in ALL of congress there is going to be a brand new day for this kinds of business as usual in D.C. by electio time 2010!!!

This health care reform bill is going to be the catlyst for this much needed enforcement of laws passed to prevent this from happening by way of lobby pay outs which tend to go against the public interests.

The health reform bill is going to pass(smile)
