What's the best solution for mobile Internet and email?

I am currently using a netbook with Ubuntu (a Linux implementation, which significantly lowers cost vs. Windows) and WiFi for mobile access.

I have DSL and a wireless router at home, which gives me mobility around the house, and WiFi hotspots, such as when I've been visiting my Mom in the hospital. I know of certain establishments, such as McDonalds, Burger King, Barnes and Noble, and others that have WiFi hotspots but don't really make much use of them.

My sister has an iPhone, which has a web browser and email client,WiFi access if available, and falls back to 3G or Edge networks if not. I don't have much personal experience with it, but she's shown me the features and it looks pretty attractive.

There are coming out new generation netbooks with 3G access as well.

Now my question is, what is the most cost efficient, and effective solution at this time, or in the near future? Each of these solutions has other features as well, such as office and other applications on the netbook, and on the iPhone, a phone, camera, the availability of books, etc.

There is the cost of DSL or Cable to use either one at home, and for the iPhone and next gen 3G netbooks, the monthly costs of 3G access.

Now if someone has a budget constraint, and basically just wants to get online at the lowest possible cost, what would be your recommended solution?

You have mention the DSL issue before, but doesn't the cable company offer high speed internet? (It is good to see you this morning sister.)

All I can contribute about computers is that I am computer brain dead. Stere, I am not kidding about this.(smile)

My computer knowledge is sending emails and putting in FIND. I did take a Word program class and that was a program or two back.LOL If I did not live so far out I could get DSL and this would help me a lot.

Nop, the only thing we can get is dial up. but this is better than what the foot hills can get. In some places to use the net one must pay a toll call fee. I do believe the base with all of their radar going all of the time and their being so powerful has something to do with it also. I live about a mile from their flight line out there.

Hell, Stere we have not had cable that long out here.LOL Also they may be slow about getting us into the new age of tech. because we are out side of the city limits. We don't even have running water if we do not have our own electric water pump.(smile) but, for the peace and quiet we have it is all worth it.that is unless you live sort of in the ear shot of a rooster who crows all the times in the middle of the night...
