BLACK DOCTORS' PRESIDENT DR. WILLARDA EDWARDS PROMOTES HEALTHCARE REFORM

In the October 9, 2009, edition of the Afro American Newspaper (Vol. 118 No. 8), the beautiful and intelligent African-American woman doctor, who is also President of the National Medical Association (association of black doctors) and with an internal medicine practice in Baltimore, Maryland, speaks out to promote healthcare reform.

In Dr. Edwards' own words, "...the current healthcare system is absolutely broken. ...First of all, we don't have the access because in many cases we are uninsured...underinsured." Dr. Edwards explains further why the racial disparity in healthcare denies African-Americans access to quality care and she supports President Obama's healthcare reform bill and the idea of a public option.

While Dr. Edwards states clearly that the healthcare reform will take some time to implement, she emphasizes that President Obama's plan will alleviate the crisis level of non-access by African-Americans due to pre-existing conditions (i.e. sickle cell anemia). This is a significant element of the healthcare reform legislation.

In addition, the article goes further to explain the gut reality of why doctors widely do not accept medical assistance (underinsured tool) and that physicians are most definitely supporting healthcare reform for our African-American community. I am particularly liking the idea of a medical home as described by Dr. Edwards in the article. In short, Dr. Edwards wishes for African-Americans (everybody) to have a medical home where they have a healthcare provider that is helping to coordinate their services and helping to navigate the heathcare system. Would a medical home help you? If you already have a medical home, how is it helping you?
