Thanks for posting... I'll definitely check out your show. I think it's a matter of perspective... women should not depend upon men however a real man will provide for his family. By "provide", I mean not just materially/financially, but also in terms of his childrens' development and well being. A Brotha may not have the newest car, nicest home, or flashly belongings but may still support his family, in the same way that expensive clothes and toys don't necessarily represent strong parenting.

And yes, fathers are necessary to children's development. Men have developed certain strengths and skills because they have a natural role to play in the lives of both young girls and young boys. Understandably, relationships don't always work and there are many strong, competent women raising children alone; however the absence of a male support figure can lead to emotional and social problems later in life. The increase in young male involvement in the criminal justice system, the decline of young males' academic achievement, and the development of gang "pseudo-family" culture over the past 30 years is directly proportional to the deterioration of traditional family structure.

If a father cannot or will not participate in his child's life, it is the responsibility of the mother or caretaker to seek out other responsible men who can expose the child to positive values. That person may be a stepfather, uncle, grandparent, colleague, or simply a responsible friend in the community. We must remember that there are individuals in our community who are actively seeking impressionable young men to perpetuate and validate their negative lifestyles, unless we beat them to it.

Sister Irma, Let me tell you about my grandmother. Now what I say may seem not to be about fathers, and may seem to be about race, but what it is about is family and community. My Grandma was a major influence in my life. I was born in Detroit, where she moved after having been raised in Texas. After my parents got married, they moved to Pennsylvania, so I did not see her too often. She would come to visit (always flew Northwest Airlines), we would drive out during summer vacations. She was a dyed-in-the-wool democrat. Took her position on that, took her position on religion (she would not come to church with us). Took her position on remaining in her same house/neighborhood, as it changed from white to black. Found a crack dealer dead on her doorstep one morning. And for the position she took she was rewarded, and I will never forget this lesson along with all the others she set for me. . As she became infirmed, and could no longer could go to the store herself, it was a young black girl who came to her aid and helped her get her groceries.. All this to say it is not black or white, but good people in every community,doing what is right, as human beings one to another.

While I sympathize with your thoughts and perhaps to some extent are true, I believe that you do not see the entire picture.

I believe that Mr. Marcus blog is exclusively referencing to Black American men who are descendents of slaves. Therefore, we must consider as our starting point that Black American men are at a serious disadvantage before the starter pistol is fired to begin the race.

This is what I mean; Black men are not sovereign men or have complete independence with a country that he could call his very own. Black men developed to what he is today out of the ashes of slavery. Consequentially, before we could criticize him especially if you are a Black American man who is a descendent of slaves as he is I would suggest that we come together to achieve sovereignty or complete independence from White America on a portion of this continent as our primary goal rather than criticizing our shortcomings.

For instance, Black men do not control their employment. Black men do not control anything in White America even ourselves. However, when many were unemployed and had a family the welfare laws of White America said that for his wife and children to eat he could not be in the house with them even if he was legitimately unemployed. I believe that you would agree with me that this welfare law cause terrible damages insidiously to Black Americans as a people.

Secondly, another law by White America was put in place that restricted the parents from raising their children. In other words, the school officials would tell the children that their mothers and fathers could not put the strap to their behind. They instructed the children that if their parents beat them to report it to the school officials immediately. In turn, the school officials would contact Protective Child Custody agency who would then come into the home and take the child then arrest the parents.

Thirdly and lastly, Black Americans had set an example in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the 1920s referred to as Black Wall Street then of what we as a people could do if we were sovereign or completely independent from White America. The Whites on the other side of town massacred and destroyed that entire Black township while no federal troops came to our people’s aid.

I believe that our permanent solution is not in anything none of you has proposed. I believe that our permanent solution is our desire to become a sovereign people or have complete independence from White America on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country to pursue life, liberty, happiness and prosperity in our own way.

I believe that White America will be hard-pressed, but eventually will be happy to see us finally a sovereign people.

I believe that God is willing to do for us today what God did for the Hebrew people 4000 years ago when they were in bondage in Egypt.

Thank you Dr. Carter. I am so sick of our need to not learn our own family's historical make up that has had us surviving these 400 years. The last thing we need is falling into another trap of how unproductive we are according to the White man's rule of education every inch of these survival tactics out of us.

The very last thing we need is for our young to believe that their mother is the cause of all of the ills in our society!!!!!!!The very last thing we need is to teach our children that their family unity is not the best place to be, because it is where we learn how to survive as an individul and not a social label where excuses must past for responsibility: yesterday, today or tomorrow!!!!!!!!

During chattel slavery our men did not act like they do today...when the welfare department would not allow fathers to live in the same home as his wife and children, our men did not act this way...

What we should be doing is going against the social welfare of today that will not allow a 13 year old single mother to live with her family and continue the social training she needs...I will nver forget this comment coming from a youth one day...he said that crack cocaine has made the black man do something even slavery could not do...TURN THE BLACK MAN AGAINST HIS OWN MOTHER...now what is the difference in drugs and this social training of our mother is the cause of all of these bad human behaviors...

No Steve, I see no racism in your grandmother, but she is some one to be highly looked up to and respected for her independance and self-esteem. It is one thing about the south that I totally respect when it comes to racism.It is a know fact at least in the past because there was above board/ out in the open hatred. Today they are too busy trying to prove we are too stupid to know racism when we see it, live it,ect.Now this is disrespect in my book....
