The Howard University Theological Seminary Was Founded On November 20, 1866, By General Oliver O. Howard, Commissioner Of The Freedman's Bureau. Howard Seminary Was Established In An Abandoned Dance Hall And Beer Saloon "for the education of youth in the liberal arts and social sciences." Today Called Howard University, It Has Become The Nation's Largest Historically Black University, With A Campus Covering 89 Acres, In Urban Northeast Washington, DC. Currently More Than 10,000 Students Are Enrolled, 88 Percent Of Whom Are Black American. Howard's First Black President Was Mordecai Wyatt Johnson.
