12 Things the Negro Must Do For Himself

by Nannie Helen Burroughs
1. The Negro Must Learn To Put First Things First. The First Things Are: Education; Development of Character Traits; A Trade and Home Ownership.
The Negro puts too much of his earning in clothes, in food, in show and in having what he calls 'a good time.' The Dr. Kelly Miller said, 'The Negro buys what he WANTS and begs for what he needs.'

2. The Negro Must Stop Expecting God and White Folk To Do For Him What He Can Do For Himself.
It is the 'Divine Plan' that the strong shall help the weak, but even God does not do for man what man can do for himself. The Negro will have to do exactly what Jesus told the man (in John 5:8) to do--Carry his own load--'Take up your bed and walk.'

3. The Negro Must Keep Himself, His Children And His Home Clean And Make The Surroundings In Which He Lives Comfortable and Attractive.
He must learn to 'run his community up'--not down. We can segregate by law, we integrate only by living. Civilization is not a matter of race, it is a matter of standards. Believe it or not--some day, some race is going to outdo the Anglo-Saxon, completely. It can be the Negro race, if the Negro gets sense enough. Civilization goes up and down that way.

4. The Negro Must Learn To Dress More Appropriately For Work And For Leisure.
Knowing what to wear--how to wear it--when to wear it and where to wear it, are earmarks of common sense, culture and also an index to character.
5. The Negro Must Make His Religion An Everyday Practice And Not Just A Sunday-Go-To Meeting Emotional Affair.

6. The Negro Must Highly Resolve To Wipe Out Mass Ignorance.
The leaders of the race must teach and inspire the masses to become eager and determined to improve mentally, morally and spiritually, and to meet the basic requirements of good citizenship. We should initiate an intensive literacy campaign in America , as well as in Africa . Ignorance--is a millstone about the neck of the race. It is democracy's greatest burden. Social integration is a relationship attained as a result of the cultivation of kindred social ideals, interests and standards. It is a blending process that requires time, understanding and kindred purposes to achieve.. Likes alone and not laws can do it.

7. The Negro Must Stop Charging His Failures Up To His 'Color' And To White People's Attitude.
The truth of the matter is that good service and conduct will make senseless race prejudice fade like mist before the rising sun. God never intended that a man's color shall be anything other than a badge of distinction. It is high time that all races were earning that fact. The Negro must first QUALIFY for whatever position he wants. Purpose, initiative, ingenuity and industry are the keys tha t all men use to get what they want. The Negro will have to do the same. He must make himself a workman who is too skilled not to be wanted, and too DEPENDABLE not to be on the job, according to promise or plan. He will never become a vital factor in industry until he learns to put into his work the vitalizing force of initiative, skill and dependability. He has gone 'RIGHTS' mad and 'DUTY' dumb.

8. The Negro Must Overcome His Bad Job Habits.
He must make a brand new reputation for himself in the world of labor. His bad job habits are absenteeism, funerals to attend, or a little business to look after. The Negro runs an off and on business. He also has a bad reputation for co nduct on the job--such as petty quarreling with other help, incessant loud talking about nothing; loafing, carelessness, due to lack of job pride; insolence, gum chewing and--too often--liquor drinking. Just plain bad job habits!

9. He Must Improve His Conduct In Public Places.
Taken as a whole, he is entirely too loud and too ill-mannered. There is much talk about wiping out racial segregation and also much talk about achieving integration. Segregation is a physical arrangement by which people are separated in various services. It is definitely up to the Negro to wipe out the apparent justification or excuse for segregation. The only effective way to do it is to clean up and keep clean. By practice, cleanliness will become a habit and habit becomes character.

10. The Negro Must Learn How To Operate Business For People--Not For Negro People, Only. To do business, he will have to remove all typical 'earmarks,' business principles; measure up to accepted standards and meet stimulating competition, graciously--in fact, he must learn to welcome competition.

11. The Average So-Called Educated Negro Will Have To Come Down Out Of The Air. He Is Too Inflated Over Nothing. He Needs An Experience Simila r To The One That Ezekiel Had--(Ezekiel 3:14-19). And He Must Do What Ezekiel Did
Otherwise, through indifference, as to the plight of the masses, the Negro, who thinks that he has escaped, will lose his own soul. It will do all leaders good to read Hebrews 13:3, and the first Thirty-seven Chapters of Ezekiel. A race transformation itself through its own leaders and its sensible 'common people.' A race rises on its own wings, or is held down by its own weight. True leaders are never 'things apart from the people.' They are the masses. They simply got to the front ahead of them. Their only business at the front is to inspire to masses by hard work and noble example and challenge them to 'Come on!' Dante stated a fact when he said, 'Show the people the light and they will find the way!' There must arise within the Negro race a leadership that is not out hunting bargains for itself. A noble example is found in the men and women of the Negro race, who, in the early days, laid down their lives for the people. Their invaluable contributions have not been appraised by the 'latter-day leaders.' In many cases, their names would never be recorded, among the unsung heroes of the world, but for the fact that white friends have written them there.
'Lord, God of Hosts, Be with us yet.'

The Negro of today does not realize that, but, for these exhibits A's, that certainly show the innate possibilities of members of their own race, white people would not have been moved to make such princely investments in lives and money, as they have made, for the establishment of schools and for the on-going of the race.

12. The Negro Must Stop Forgetting His Friends. 'Remember.'

Read Deuteronomy 24:18. Deuteronomy rings the big bell of gratitude. Why? Because an ingrate is an abomination in the sight of God. God is constantly telling us that 'I the Lord thy God delivered you'--through human instrumentalities. The American Negro has had and still has friends--in the North and in the South. These friends not only pray, speak, write, influence others, but make unbelievable, unpublished sacrifices and contributions for the advancement of the race--for their brothers in bonds. The noblest thing that the Negro can do is to so live and labor that these benefactors will not have given in vain. The Negro must make his heart warm with gratitude, his lips sweet with thanks and his heart and mind resolute with purpose to justify the sacrifices and stand on his feet and go forward--'God is no respector of persons. In every nation, he that feareth him and worketh righteousness is' sure to win out. Get to work! That's the answer to everything that hurts us. We talk too much about nothing instead of redeeming the time by working.

R-E-M-E-M-B-E-R

In spite of race prejudice, America is brim full of opportunities. Go after them!

And, this was written in the early 1900's! The more things change the more they stay the same.

What is wrong with Black people wanting to spend money on clothes, I would to if I had the extra money. People to the things that make them feel good about themselves. I do think that more neighorhood need litter control. It is written that Cleanliness is next to Godliness. This may account for the reason why in the past the house negro seem to have a better life then others, because they learned house cleaning methods that mysteriously brought changes in their lives.

Hello Ms. Jen,

Ms. Nannie Helen Burroughs and you, Ms. Jan does not have a clue as to what Black Americans need. Therefore, let me make rhyme and reason out of the 12 things mentioned.

As to # 1 you said that the Negroes need to put first things first and that makes sense. You believe that education is first among a few other things.
However, the commonsense intelligence should tell you that the desire to be sovereign or have complete independence on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders to pursue life, liberty, happiness and prosperity in our own way is first. The desire to have our hands on the helm of our own destiny is first. Then, education and all other things could be built on a sturdy foundation that belongs only to us.

As to #2 you said that The Negro Must Stop Expecting God and White Folk To Do For Him What He Can Do For Himself.
This is not a true statement. Black Americans must come to expect and hold God responsible to help us. We need the help that is more intelligent than we are and in stronger than our White America is. We need the same sought of help that God gave to the Hebrew people and Moses when they were in bondage in Egypt. Forget about John 5:8 and concern yourself with the story of Moses and the Hebrew people. They cried out to God for help and God delivered them since they could not deliver themselves. The first sign that the Hebrew people knew that God was helping them was through Moses, God’s anointed one. Likewise, the first sign that you will know God has intervened on our behalf is through me, I am the first genuine prophet to Black Americans. I am telling you that we must desire to become a sovereign people or have complete independence on the portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders, and it is going to happen.

As to #3 there are so many things I could say but I am going to limited to one thing. You said this, “He must learn to 'run his community up'--not down.” We, as Black Americans, do not want a community. We want a country of our own. My thinking compared to you all as is considerably as day and night. You are reaching for something small while I am reaching for the ultimate. I am the Chosen One. There were Hebrews that wanted less and Moses wanted the ultimate, the Exodus since Moses was God’s Chosen One

As to #4 you said that The Negro Must Learn To Dress More Appropriately. As a sovereign people, we will have the opportunity to create a dress style particular to us as the people of India have. However, I understand what you mean when you say appropriately and that means we will have the opportunity of civilizing ourselves. Civilization is a matter of race. That is, no race can civilize another race. All what the dominant race would be doing is causing the inferior race to submit.

As to #5 The Negro Must Make His Religion An Everyday Practice And Not Just A Sunday-Go-To Meeting Emotional Affair.
Black Americans are not practicing our religion yet. When you think that Black Americans has a religion to practice, I could see that White American people, mentally speaking, insidiously, subliminally and psychologically control you.
The religion of Black America is The Salvation of God for the Sovereignty of Black Americans who is Descendents of Slaves.

As to #6 you said that The Negro Must Highly Resolve To Wipe Out Mass Ignorance. Black America’s genuine prophet could only do this. An ordinary leader is not capable of doing this since he himself is ignorant. Moses was the one that wiped out the mass ignorance of his Hebrew people that got them to the point they could leave Egypt in debt bondage. If my rationale is wrong then the lead is before the coming of Moses should have been able to do what Moses did.
There is no Black leader why is it that I am. God has made me wises as God made Moses wises since God is backing the both of us. What I say is going to happen since God inspired me to know what I know. Black Americans are going to become a sovereign people on the portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders.

As to #7 you said that The Negro Must Stop Charging His Failures Up To His 'Color' And To White People's Attitude. Black Americans are the people they are since White American people raised as to be what we are. No other people controlled us, educated us, clothe us and gave us the worst health care of any people except White American people, am I right. Therefore, it is your stupidity that you would think that White people’s hands has nothing to do with our demise. The rest of your comment has the burden of inferiority by suggesting Black Americans qualifies themselves to be skillful workers for White America. Why do you not suggest that Black Americans become a sovereign people or have complete independence that among our own kind there will be both skilled employees as well as sharp entrepreneurs as employers? It is because you, Ms. Jen and Ms. Helen have slave mentalities.

As to #8 you said that The Negro Must Overcome His Bad Job Habits.
Ms. Helen and you Ms. Jen has gross ignorance and out right inferiority about yourselves to write this stupid-**** about my people as well as you people. We want our own country to provide jobs for ourselves and have our own economy competitive to the economy of England, China, White America and Japan soon enough in the future.

The rest of the blog is nothing but a bunch of foolish and stupid stuff from the perspective of a Negro with slave mentality.

Lastly, you said this, “In spite of race prejudice, America is brim full of opportunities. Go after them!”

Now, supposing we had our own sovereign country, could we not create and go after our own opportunities? Could we not build a country to prosperity that other ethnicities would feel privilege to come to our country as people feels privilege to come to White America? It is really in the manner of how think. Presently, we are some very ignorant people. However, our ignorance will soon be replaced with extraordinary intelligence.

Tell me what you think.

Hello Ms. Dorothy,

I understand your point. However, I am not Mr. Charles Taylor.

I will not be running anything, since I am not a political leader. My divine responsibility as the anointed one is to bring Black Americans who are descendents of slaves that are Muslims and Christians as one people and lead into sovereignty on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders. The time has come for Black America to put their hands on the helm of their own destiny. God will do for us as God did for the Hebrew people in the days of Moses.

What Dr. King said he saw when he went to the mountaintop is my divine responsibility under the inspiration and guidance of God that I have. He saw that he may not get to the Promised Land with us, but we as a people will get to the Promised Land.

However, to answer your question again, I am not a political leader. There are much better minded people among us who could form an effective Democratic government and a capitalistic economy with integrity that would far surpass what White America’s founding fathers established.

Tell me what you think.

I would say many universal points also.

Harry Watley Sunday, November 22nd 2009 at 9:31PM

Hello to all,

There are not any good, useful and beneficial points for Black Americans in this blog.

Have you all noticed that the thought to become a sovereign people or have complete independence on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders was in the future of Ms. Nannie Helen Burroughs’ time? This woman thought was in the box labeled slave mentality. Have you all not made any advancement since Ms. Burroughs’ time? Remember that I wrote a blog that said intelligence is not one of Black America’s disciplines. However, we are going to become some very intelligent people in the very near future.

Are you all not intelligent enough to determine this factor? You all are living in my time. We will become a sovereign people.

Tell me what you think.

LOL...Another one of your fortune cookie replies Harry???

Marquerite Burgess Monday, November 23rd 2009 at 12:58AM

First let me say, that despite when this was originally written, there are some people it does apply to and that is factual. Secondly, Is it possible for anyone to write a blog on this site and not have it hijacked my someone? Every blog that I read now, has the same comment from the same person talking about the same thing. Just ridiculous.

Harry Watley Monday, November 23rd 2009 at 1:46AM

Hello Siebra

You said this, “Another one of your fortune cookie replies Harry???”

Everything that I say is going to happen. Therefore, everything I say is true. I understand your sarcastic remark. But, you could rest assure that Black Americans are going to go through a metamorphosis that the world will no God is with us as God was with the Hebrew people.

We now that our only permanent solution ever to be real people is to become a sovereign people. To become sovereign we must have a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders and we are entitling to this portion of land.

Should not God’s forerunner tell you these things ahead of time? Everyone should weigh in and tell me if I am wrong.

Am I right?

Tell me what you think.

Hello Ms. Burgess,

You said this, “First let me say, that despite when this was originally written, there are some people it does apply to and that is factual.”

Ms. Burgess, please tell me who are these some people that this blog would have applied to when it was written.

Explain yourself if what you say is true and rational.

What say you?

Jen, for a while I felt I was reading one of Minister Farrakhan's speeches. This is a very enlightening post!!!

Jen Fad Tuesday, November 24th 2009 at 2:25PM

Thanks for the comments guys. As I stated in the blog post, it was a RE-POST from a sister from Black Women Connect site.

Harry Watley Tuesday, November 24th 2009 at 4:20PM

Hello Jen,

You said this to my response of #8 on your blog, “Just wondering what god you are serving Brother Harry. You have lost my respect.”

I do not understand why I should lose your respect. My thoughts are that by you posting this woman’s feelings you agree with her. Now, I could see that the undertone of this woman’s thinking is that Black Americans are subservient and inferior people. In essence, she is warning Black Americans not to mess up with White America, am I right.

I am here to extract Black Americans from this sort of low self-esteem attitude about ourselves. Black Americans are on the threshold of becoming a sovereign people or having complete independence from White America on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders. Therefore, I am here to instill within us a feeling of self-superiority.

So tell me why you suddenly lost respect for our God and me?

Tell me what you think.

For me, "I" have disqualified myself from this post's list and pity this 'tunnel vision" that came up with this list in th first place.(smile)

...and, may "I" add, ALL BLACK'S DON'T STEAL...
