BLACK CHURCH ORDAINS FORMER KKK LEADER

BLACK CHURCH ORDAINS FORMER KKK LEADER

MIAMI, OK — On Nov. 29, Oklahoman Johnny Lee Clary knelt before the Church of God in Christ’s elders, who ordained him as a minister in what is one of the nation’s largest black churches. The fact that Clary is white made the moment historic.

The fact that he is also a former Ku Klux Klan leader made it — at least in Clary’s view — something divine.

"We’re making history,” said Clary, 50, of Miami. "We’re building a bridge of racial reconciliation, and what better way to do that than with a former KKK leader ministering in a black church that boasts over 6 million members? I hope I can have a great impact.”

Clary made a different kind of contribution to humanity as an angry teenager. He joined the Klan.

Ironically, his ordainment ceremony last month in San Diego shared some of the ritualistic acts of a long-ago Klan ceremony. Yet the two events now stand as the darkest and greatest moments of his life.

"The worst thing I ever did was swear an allegiance to the KKK, vowing to hate all Jews and blacks and people of other races,” Clary recalled. "I knelt before the Klan leaders as they sprinkled me with water. I then swore an oath to the KKK and the god of the KKK. But they can call their god anything they want — Jesus Christ or whatever. It doesn’t matter. Because their god is not the God of the Bible.

"Their god is Satan.”

Clary rose through the ranks of the White Knights of the KKK, eventually attaining the status of an imperial wizard. He later quit the hate group after a falling out with another Klan leader.

Disillusioned, Clary reached for the Bible. The Word set him free, he said.

Clary soon began preaching to anyone who would listen. Television shows picked up his story, prompting him to appear on talk shows such as "The Phil Donahue Show,” "Geraldo,” "The 700 Club,” and "Sally Jesse Raphael.” In recent years, he has traveled the nation evangelizing and has made annual trips to Australia.

Along the way he crossed paths with Bishop George McKinney, pastor of St. Stephen’s Cathedral Church of God in Christ in San Diego and one of the church’s 12 elders. The two met more than 15 years ago at a Christian event in Montgomery, Ala.

"Bishop McKinney and I became friends,” Clary said. "One day he told me he would ordain me as a minister because the time was needed for racial reconciliation ... Finally, after years of being sidetracked, I agreed the time was right. My mission is to bring people of all races together.

"The Bible says there is one church, one Lord, one baptism, and so there should be one people.”

McKinney said Clary’s dramatic turnaround is a testament that the Holy Spirit can even bring a heart filled with hatred, prejudice and destruction under control.

"I’m thankful to God that there is still ongoing evidence of His grace, forgiveness and power to redeem,” McKinney said.

While he was in San Diego, McKinney said, Clary’s presence and his story of evangelism and racial reconciliation were warmly received by the predominantly black congregation.

"And he’s certainly qualified to speak on either because of his own background and journey,” the bishop said.

Clary is now waiting to hear from Bishop McKinney where his travel schedule will take him. Eventually, he hopes to oversee his own Church of God in Christ congregation.

"Looking back now at my days in the Klan, I regret not saying anything when I knew someone’s property was going to be destroyed or people were going to be terrorized or beaten up,” Clary said. "Instead, I stood by and said nothing ... Not anymore.”

Siebra:
This is an amazing story. It just keeps coming back to the passage MInister Farrakhan quoted from the Bible that seems to be a running theme throughout this website:
BEHOLD, HOW GOOD AND HOW PLEASANT IT IS FOR BRETHREN TO DWELL TOGETHER IN UNITY! PSALM 133.
The sooner we take that to heart, the happier this planet will be.

Thank you, Siebra, once again, for sharing this bit of grace and wisdom .

While I agree with Mr. Richard Kigel there is another issue that has to be addressed. That is the irony that the Black church seems to embrace everyone, even a 'reformed' KKK leader but hesitates or even rejects unity with the Nation of Islam and Black Nationalist groups that seek the upliftment of the Black community. This is not an indictment of all Black churches, but I pray 2010 will see a change for the better.

Hello Mr. Steven Muhammad,

Steven, your comment supports the fundamental fact that Black Americans are very much in need of God’s help and a prophet since we are very naïve and ignorant people.

Let me explain to you what I am saying. You basically agree with Richard who finds it okay in the spirit of unity that a supposedly former member of the KKK should religiously shepherd Black people and not his own White people highlights the height of your ignorance, Steven. Am I right?

Next you express that it is irony of this Black church to embrace a supposedly reformed KKK member, but would not embrace the Nation of Islam and Black nationalist groups, which speaks to the tone of how naïve and ignorant all Black Americans are, am I right.

We, as a people certainly need the strong hands of God, now do we not.

Steven, what if everything that we would have coming from God is brand-new, would not the position and philosophy of the Nation of Islam, the KKK, the Christian church and the ideologies of all Black nationalist groups is unacceptable since it is old and as I said what we will have from God is all brand-new, we would not have these superficial problems or would we?

Steven I am asking you this question because I know that none of this nonsense problem is going into our sovereign country since everything we get will be brand-new.

Steven, do you not understand that God has granted us sovereignty or complete independence on the portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders? Now, what good is our sovereignty or complete independence if we would still have Whites or if it was the case Chinese, Japanese and African people over us? We certainly would not have sovereignty or complete independence, so stop being ignorant and naïve. God will not permit us to have anyone over us except one of our own kinds.

Likewise, what good would the exodus have done for the Hebrew people if they was still naïve and ignorant that it would be okay with them that Pharaoh and the Egyptian people could continue to lead them? Again, stop being ignorant and naïve.

I am the way, and besides me, there is no other way that Black Americans could ever become a real people in this world.

Tell me what you think.

He attained the status of an imperial wizard and after a falling out with another Klan leader he changed the course of his life. Yet he is never satified with just being a regular member, he has issues because he needs to always be in a position of control. The majority of backsliders have not found the forgiveness that he has.

Hello Helen,

Our people, Black Americans, which includes you, Ms. Helen are some very ignorant people, yet we believe that we are very intelligent.

This is what I mean; the majority of Jim Jones followers were our people, Black Americans who are descendents of slaves.

We are some very ignorant people that we would especially follow those who are not of our kinds and justify our ignorance enough to kill ourselves and our children as we did with Jim Jones, am I right.

Why do you not want Black Americans, our people to become a sovereign people or have complete independence from White America on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders?

Why do you not ask God to deliver unto us our own prophet as the children of Israel prayed and asked God for help and God delivered unto them Prophet Moses who led the Hebrew people out of ignorance, bondage and slavery in Egypt?

Tell me what you think.

Harry Watley Tuesday, December 29th 2009 at 11:56PM

Hello Mr. Weston,

Why do you think it is such a problem that we cannot find our way with in ourselves as a people?

Do you feel that it is wrong or that you are betraying Whites because you decided to become a sovereign people on a portion of this continent that you could call your very own country with borders?

In other words, do you believe that there were Hebrew people that felt they were betraying Pharaoh and the Egyptian people because they let Egypt with Moses? Why would they not be flipped out to go with Moses?

Please give me some intelligent justification why you would say, “but I will remain optimistic and hope it is not a scam but for good.”

Tell me what you think.

What makes this such a fascinating and instructive story is that we know how hard it is to forgive. Mr. Weston, I think, said it all: "I can't get my mind around this - leaves me with lots of questions ."

People will always doubt his motives. But, for me, the most telling point in the piece was right in the first sentence when he KNEELED before the elders of the church--a powerful act of humility and contrition. IN the end, it is the men and women who live with him and worship with who know him best. And if they saw fit to accept him that is a powerful recommendation. How can any of us judge him without knowing the man?
I loved Mr. Weston's comment at the end: "But I will remain optimistic and hope it is not a scam but for good. "
All I can say is: "AMEN!"

kkk is a christianPagan Tribe, there is no big deal that a negrochristianPagan Tribe would embrace Racialist thought---It came from the same origin and Thought.

Harry Watley Wednesday, December 30th 2009 at 11:36AM

Hello Mr. Weston and Mr. Kigel,

The point that I am making is not about forgiveness of this former KKK member as Mr. Kigel said. Neither is my point about preparing ourselves to govern this entire country, presuming that you are honestly talking about Blacks governing this country that belongs to White America, which is something that we do not want to do. Let White Americans govern themselves and let Black Americans govern themselves as well. We are two different people, am I right.

I am talking and have always talked about Black Americans who are descendents of slaves. Therefore, I am talking about what Blacks never had. I am referring to the intangible “Thing” if you will that cannot be given, but instead it must be earned. This, “Thing” that Black Americans has never had we must earn.

In other words, in this real world life there are circumstances of natural hardship or natural obstacles that nature presents to any people and countries to survive, improve and advance our quality of life that would turn us, Blacks Americans into a real people the world over would recognize and respect if we were a sovereign people on a portion of this continent. For instance, if Whites gave us everything we ever wanted without having to tackle these natural hardships and obstacles we have gained nothing. Do you understand what I am saying to you? Mr. Weston, sovereignty is not a picnic. Sovereignty comes with tremendous burdens and it has great rewards as well.

A comparable example to what I am saying is that it is a difference when a person steals money to a person that earns money. Earning something gives you the experience to rationally deal with the natural obstacles while stealing does not. The rewards down the road is the person that earns his money usually has his money in the end while the person that robbed his money is without, am I right.

So again, I am not talking about forgiveness as Mr. Kigel mentioned. Neither am I talking about waiting to see anything of a sham as you mentioned, Mr. Weston.

Again, I am talking about Black Americans coming to greatness as White Americans did when they came to this country, encountered, and overcame the Native American Indians that was an obstacle to them. I am talking about Chinese people encountering their personal obstacles in China and overcoming. Supposing the first emperor of China did not think that unifying all the providences of China was a necessity, China would be in a mass today as the continent of Africa is. Do you see my point?

Mr. Weston, Black Americans are a new breed or race of people that has emerged out of the ashes of slavery. We are going to inherit a portion of this continent if we could build enough common sense to want a portion of this continent.

White America will be hard-pressed, but they will be happy that we have become a sovereign people right next door to them.

The same as it was with the children of Israel. They were able to leave Egypt, bondage and slavery when they mustered up enough common sense to want to leave and Pharaoh was made to let them go am I right.

Tell me what you think.

Harry Watley Wednesday, December 30th 2009 at 7:41PM

Hello Mr. Weston,

Mr. Weston, no one who is not of our kinds should be allowed to lead us.

Moses would never have allowed an Egyptian to lead the Hebrew children especially in the Temple nor the Hebrew adults as well. I guess you do not understand the finer points of what I am saying or do you? The way you rationalize Mr. Weston is very disturbing and threatening to the safeguard of Black Americans.

Now, understand me. I am not saying anything negative about this former KKK member. I am saying, Mr. Weston that you have to be some sort of an idiot to be comfortable that this person not of your kinds to trust your children’s faith in his hands. In other words, I am shooting you down to say you would take the position to sit and wait.

Mr. Weston, it seems that you have no desire ever to become a real people. It seems that you have no desire ever to become a sovereign people on a portion of this continent that you could call your very own country with borders. My only consolation to you is that they were ignorant Hebrew people such as you that gave Moses hell.

What is your IQ level Mr. Weston? Mine is only a 68, yet I can rationalize better than you can.

Tell me what you think

Harry Watley Wednesday, December 30th 2009 at 10:32PM

Hello Mr. Weston,

I want you to rationalize on the side of Black Americans and not in the middle or to the opposite of Black Americans.

That is my concern with you and many others when I read the things that you all say. I do my best to get inside your head to understand what the hell is going on why that you all cannot rationalize on the side of Black Americans since you are a Black American. Do you understand where I am coming from?

Incidentally, I use the story of Moses for comparison and contrast that you would better understand me, my task, my anointing and my love for Black Americans

What say you?
