Former Basketball Coach of the University of Memphis, Dana Kirk gave his final farewell as he passed away on February 15, 2010. The cause of death was a stated as a heart attack. The former coach led the University of Memphis Tigers basketball team to the final four in 1985. Kirk was dismissed the following year for legal troubles. He was a West Virginia native was a superior lead of the Tigers basketball team leading them to a number one college team to the NCAA semifinal. The 1985 game is most remembered with disasterous loss to Villanova was one the most watched game ever of the university's team. After he was dismissed his assistant coach , Larry Finch took on as Head coach making him the first ever Black Head Coach at the University.
After his coaching career ended, Dana Kirk was indicted on 11 counts of tax evasion and filing false income tax returns, mail fraud and obstruction of justice. In addition one of his top players, Keith Lee tesitified that he had received $40, 000 dollars in illegal payoffs from the coach thereby the former coach served 4 months in a federal prison in Montgomery, AL. The Tigers team was also banned for two years during it's 1985 Final Four appearance.
Arrangements for Dana Kirk funeral is tenative scheduled for Friday, February 19, 2010 at The Christ United Methodist Church. Coach Kirk was 74 years old.
CONFIRMED UPDATE: Waite services held on Thrusday, 02.18.2010 at Christ United Methodist Church between 7p.m-8p.m. Funeral Services: Friday, 02.19.2010 at Christ United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Burial services private to immediate family members only.
Despite his obstacles....Dana Kirk was a great coach in my book!
