BOOK REVIEW: “THE HISTORY OF WHITE PEOPLE” by Nell Irvin Painter, 2010

“MOLECULAR GENETICS DROVE THE LONGEST NAIL INTO THE THEORY OF RACE. EACH PERSON, IT TURNS OUT, SHARES 99.99 PERCENT OF THE GENETIC MATERIAL OF EVERY OTHER HUMAN BEING. INCESSANT HUMAN MIGRATION HAS MADE US ALL MULTIRACIAL.”

Review by Glenn C. Altschuler, Sunday, March 14, 2010

As Nell Irvin Painter, a professor of history emerita at Princeton University, reminds us, theories of race, grounded in heredity, that today seem bizarre, confusing and contradictory, were widely accepted throughout most of American history. And, although biologists and geneticists no longer believe in the physical existence of "races," the concept lives on, along with racism.

Designed for a popular audience, Dr. Painter's book is a useful synthesis of the evolution of ideas about "white races" from the ancient Greeks to the modern age.

Taxonomists, she demonstrates, never clearly defined race. They sometimes acknowledged the role culture and climate played in determining physical appearance, even as they claimed that the distinctive characteristics of groups were fixed and unalterable.

Sometimes, following the lead of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, who in 1795 gave us the term "Caucasian," they transformed their own standards of beauty (like blue eyes and blond hair) into scientifically certified racial traits.

And sometimes, "even when the judgment of sound scholarship did not suffice," they turned languages into peoples, applying the word "arya," meaning noble or spiritual in Sanskrit, to an imagined superior race of Aryans.

Dr. Painter doesn't hide her contempt for her subjects. With the possible exception of Ralph Waldo Emerson, most of them deserve it.

Weighing in at 624 pages of text, 86 maps, tables, and graphs and a bibliography of more than 2,000 sources in several languages, William Z. Ripley's "Races of Europe" (1899), she snarls, was actually a "cloudy perversion of Darwinian evolution and Mendelian inheritance" that "blinded readers to its incoherence."

Open Lothrop Stoddard's "The Revolt Against Civilization" (1922), she snaps, and "hordes of vicious, stupid, fast-breeding, Alpine brachy-browns pour out" in a "mishmash of degenerate-families-Jews-Bolsheviks-intelligence-test-heredity-arianism."

More important, however, is Dr. Painter's summary of the evidence that race is, well, a pigment of our imagination. s*xual habits, she points out, have always over-flowed racial lines.

In the United States, more than one-seventh of whites, one-third of blacks, four-fifths of Asians and nineteen-twentieths of Native Americans are closely related to someone from a different racial group.

Among whites, more than three of four marriages cross ethnic boundaries that were once deemed racial.

Molecular genetics drove "the longest nail into the theory of race." Each person, it turns out, shares 99.99 percent of the genetic material of every other human being.

People from the same race can differ from one another as much as people from different races. And the interplay between the environment and genes further subverts the "heredity is destiny" gospel.

Race talk, of course, hasn't gone away. As the category of whiteness has expanded (to include Irish, Italians, Slavs and Jews), the white-black binary endures. It rests, once again, on skin color, even though people can get lighter or darker climatically, cosmetically or s*xually.

"Ideally," Dr. Painter concludes, we should realize that "incessant human migration has made us all multi-racial."

Brother Rich, this book review gives a very intersting view of white people. Some of them I've experience in reading of some where before especially when racial lines have mixed bloodlines if you will and causing that even whites are not really all white anymore. I felt overall the review concluded what we may already know, real true races of people may one day not exist any more and people will be humans of mankind. At least it's how I summed it up. Enjoyed it.

Right, MIISRAEL!

WE can see the validity of her point right in front of our eyes.

"People from the same race can differ from one another as much as people from different races."

What she is saying is that racial classification is not all abouit skin color. Some Mediterranean Europeans clasified as "white" are darker than some African-Americans classified as "black".

My friend has ten brothers and sisters, all from the same mother and father--and all the siblings show a range of colors from dark to light.

It shows that in this crazy world, heridity is not necessarily destiny.

What is this..Richard.."As Nell Irvin Painter, a professor of history emerita at Princeton University, reminds us, theories of race, grounded in heredity...A professor of history...whose history..And since when does a professor of history speak about something so profound as human genetics with authority...Its absurd..Its like having a dancer speak to me about switching voltages of todays microprocessor chips.

On the other hand, what you will find if you have scientist professionals perform the scientific method...which says you project a hypothesis...it is tested and qualitative data is obtained....then conclusions are drawn and the person must appear before their peers and answer questions....debate is raised on the validity of the argument. Then judgement is made on the validity of the hypothesis. We are no where near this...I do not get my science facts from historians. It is prefered to get the science facts from the science professionals.

Thanik you, Irma.

So I would like SCIENCE to enumerate the RACES and tell me the SCIENTIFIC criteria to classify any of the 6 billion individuals on this planet into one of these SCIENTIFIC RACE categories.

It CANNOT be done. RACE is not a SCIENTIFIC concept, any more than RELIGION. But we, unfortunately, can perpetuate BIAS in the NAME of either.

Richard Kigel Saturday, March 20th 2010 at 5:21PM

Exactly. Thank you Steve.

That is essentially what Dr. Painter is saying.

As the book reviewer points out: "Race talk, of course, hasn't gone away...and the white-black binary endures. It rests, once again, on skin color, even though people can get lighter or darker climatically, cosmetically or s*xually."

How can race classifications be definitive when: "People from the same race can differ from one another as much as people from different races?"

There is too much ambiguity to make clear reliable classification boundaries.

Dr. Painter makes the same point that Dr. Henry Louis Gates has been making with his examination of tracing family roots through genetics: "incessant human migration has made us all multi-racial."

I like what Spike Lee has said and I think it is a statement most everyone can agree with: "THE MORE COLORS, THE MORE BETTER."

Now that is Science we can believe in!

THE MORE COLORS...AND THE MORE VITAMIN "D"...THE MORE BETTER!!!

Isn't it amazing that while White people were hanging black slaves by the neck they were the great white race and we, the blacks, were 3/4 human being. Now that the number of Blacks and Hispanic is increasing in the United States...and whites see their status as the majority under threat....they "now" want to pass their crap that we are all one race......NO WAY

Dear Jamal Abraham:

FYI--Dr. Nell Irvin Painter is one of the most highly respected AFRICAN-AMERICAN scholars in the country. So your argument is really with her. Even if you disagree with her, she is still a great African-American scholar.

I have an idea! Why not actually READ her book before you criticize her point!

Jamal, Hello.

On this site I am the minority, is it not so?

Hello my brand new brother Rich...if you have not already read my blog on how we don't need any more attention on how we in our race do not see each other as DIFFERENT but DEfICIENT...

please read it when you get a chance to do so...lov ya. (smile)

Isn't having freedoms of speech and privacy as Civil Rights just great as a 'teaching tool' l??????????????? S-M-I-L-E!!!!!!!!!!!!...yes we can...

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

...AND, "I" WILL ACCEPT THE PROFESSOR'S "I" HAVE ACHIEVED AGAINST ANY "i" WILL ACHIEVE SOME DAY WITH THE HELP OF OTHERS, ANY DAY. loooooool (smile)

again thanks for the teaching moments of this review, brother "Cow" along with your comment sister" Bride".(smile)

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

would it not be great if we could just settle for science...we could then just atribute skin color on vitamin "D" since it seems that we must have this in our bodys to l-i-v-e no matter the pros / cons of (who practices the corret religion or not) our needs to demean all of God's children...

where people live close to the equater the skin must not allow a dangerous amount of sun light in to our body and farther away the skin must be lighter to allow more sun light into the body thus allowing in vitamin "D".(smile)
