When Is Emailing a Manager That a Candidate Will Be Late for a Job Interview Acceptable?

I'm really angry about something that happened to me this morning. Although I know showing up late to an interview looks bad, I don't think its as bad as emailing a manager that someone is "running late".

What I'm upset about is the person in the HR department when I spoke with her to let her know --- sent the manager an EMAIL instead of calling the manager directly to let her know. I was shocked.

When is emailing a manager that a candidate will be late for a job interview acceptable?

It's tacky.... It's not professional... and I shows that the candidate cannot be taken seriously!

Jen in my opinion e-mail are great for communications! That's if the manager reads his or her e-mail frequently enough. Most do, however some only check their e-mail once a day. The process of e-mailing her of your tardiness falls into if he or she is a regular reader of their e-mail. It's not unacceptable --but I would say if falls into the catagory of being a bit more responsible to make a call if you're running late for an interview--[not saying your irresponsible, I know you are] . When something happens like your situation; I think probably it would be better if you had called. I believe e-mailing becomes acceptable if you let your interviewer know via e-mail at least 24 hours before your actual interview time. If you do it the same day, chances are your e-mail will not be read. Say you got stuck in traffic, or something held you up a few minutes....then calls are best. E-mail work well, but messages can fall through the cracks. Different managers have ways they use e-mail, and for urgent messages or reporting in at certain times almost of them I think prefer telephone calls over e-mails. Use e-mails in advance, telephone calls for the same day. That's what I think.. Sweet J.

Hello Brother Mo & I agree with you on that... like I could understand if it was Blackberry or a text. This HR girl stated she EMAILED the manager. What an idiot!

I should have known that this girl wasn't experienced when she declined to give me the phone number of the manager when I was rescheduling my appointment in the event that something else came up. And trust me... things always come up when you have a family, children, a personal life, etc..

I have always been given the name and phone number of the managers I've had interviews with in case of trouble finding the place or just communicating. I even asked the receptionist if the HR girl was new. This is definitely a teachable moment for me... to not be late and to make sure I have the contact information of the person I'm interviewing with.
