Kingston Jamaica's Gangs

Jen Fad · Tuesday, May 25th 2010 at 3:11PM · 1215 views
I really don't believe anyone who is a thinking breathing person really wants drugs or gangs in their neigborhood. I found this clip note from a video from Utube from 2001 footage. People want to be safe in their neighborhoods like the people of Bennetlands came together and organized Together Against Violence -in 2001 in their home land of Jamaica...

I couldn't embed the video but here's the link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Feff1PfVf0...

Bennetlands is a ghetto community in the heart of Kingston, Jamaica's capital city - home to 5,000 inhabitants - half of them under 25 and over 2,000 of them unemployed. Once, despite the poverty, Bennetlands was a peaceful place, with daily life revolving around the four main pillars of the community - its primary school, two churches and the S-Corner Clinic which provided health care, support and education for school drop-outs.

But in the 1980s war broke out in the region - with rival 'corner' gangs fighting a vicious turf battle over Bennetlands' one high street, terrorising the neighbourhood and preventing children from going to school, and for most of the residents Bennetlands became a prison without bars.

This week's City Life tells how the local leaders joined forces to challenge the local gangs to heal their difference and work together to restore a sense of community in one poor Jamaican neighbourhood.

Jen Fad Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 10:49AM

Human beings want to feel safe in the place that they live. Who wants to lay their heads down or their children's heads down in fear of having to dodge a bullet? Definitely not me.

Siebra Muhammad Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 11:04AM

With all the violence taking place in Jamaica I know Bob Marley ought to be turning in his grave...SMH

Siebra Muhammad Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 3:22PM

WOW...it's sad we're not safe anywhere...

Jen Fad Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 4:21PM

@ Bro. Clark

Thanks for that information, but I want to know why it appears to you that Black nations can't govern themselves and also why ordinary citizens continue to sit back and be victimized by their own government? It appears to be a reoccurring theme with Black Nations. I know that we are smarted than the way we govern. Is it Greed?

Cynthia Merrill Artis Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 7:35PM

The next question is, why is Jamaica, Haiti and other third-world nations in the economic states they’re in?

_____________________________________answer below

Because the US has raped all of these countries of their resources.... so what's left?

Cynthia Merrill Artis Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 7:37PM

If they do not have the goods to bargain and trade.... They have no gain economically nor monetarily.... MONEY talks!! Countries are businesses....

Jen Fad Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 8:55PM

@ Clark I think you got me wrong regards my core question. Cynthia was able to help me by saying what I really was trying to say; furthermore, you were nil on the senitment when the Mexico was having the same problem a few months ago. Where was the sentimental feeling then?
Poverty is a plaque that must be rooted out.

@ Cynthia You got it! Why are Black nations in peril is really what I wanted to know and why aren't they taking care of the basic necessities for their own people?

Cynthia Merrill Artis Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 10:04PM

the Benjamins Bay Bee!! the duckets.... the money!! I always wandered why did they always show the "Feed The Children" Campaigns... But I found out that this is a PSA ... Of course this condition exists... But the "Media" goes into the poorest countries.... and film the mal-nutritioned, the under nourished children.... It's Because of the slow economic development.... unClean water, dirt loads... the Unsanitary conditions....
But the sad part is..... Why doesn't the government which receives aide... why is it that they go into communities to upgrade... rather than going into villages and townships which needs it.... Still economics.... Why invest into an area... you can't generate money from????? So that's why we have these conditions.... How can the community build up it's community sorroundings??? With lack of schools, and computers, "technology" how can they progress... If the government doesn't invest into these communities.... The conditions will never improve. It's UGLY but it's truth...........

It'a just like the major cities in the US.... you have New York, The Bronx, Staten Island, Harlem, Queens.... Brooklyn.... BUT what do you see the most... The Bronx... with it's Ghettos, Projects.... why because normally in black communities with the highest rate of blacks, elderly, less job opportunities... These are the target areas.... So I understand the Media Spin.... NEWS is the ugly....

Cynthia Merrill Artis Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 10:29PM

@ Jen you said: Human beings want to feel safe in the place that they live. Who wants to lay their heads down or their children's heads down in fear of having to dodge a bullet? Definitely not me.
__________________________________ I believe all humans want to be in a place where there are educational opportunities, job opportunities, adequate housing... But I don't want this to be taken the wrong way.........
Sometimes it's called Survival... By Human Nature we have 5 basic needs in order to survive... if anyone is placed in an environment they will adapt to the environment... In a lot of poverty areas... Some basic needs are stripped away... Clean water... food..But that's what they are acustomed to. Of course for you and I this would seem outlandished we are use to certain standards... Thank God...
other countries like China...it.. use to be our primary source for Rice... Until our government found out how their rice was being produced! Unsanitary conditions ...and they were importing this rice..... In Korea... do you know it's considered a luxury to have a toilet and clean running water? China produces cars .... The average working citizen cannot afford a car..if you ever look at any documentaries you will see alot of them riding their bikes. Girl the smog... it's so thick and harmful.. more I read something about Chinese have the highest death rate from lung cancer because of the irritants like carbon floating around in the air.. as for the cars these folks make the cars... So it's all basic economics... SHO ME THE MONEY... I know I left some things out when I start on the topic of the have and the have nots I get in a spin.... So basically what the news show us is the SALES end pitch!!
My grandparents had this big house and no air conditioner.... I thought how can people live in the south and not have a/c... while living on the farm they didn't have it..

Cynthia Merrill Artis Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 10:53PM

@ Clark....
1. Haiti was once a country flourished with natural resources... gold copper...
2. Lack of a stable and trustworthy banking system has impeded Haiti’s economic development. Banks in Haiti have collapsed on a regular basis.
Agriculture
3. Haiti also has an agricultural export sector. Agriculture, together with forestry and fishing, accounts for about one-quarter of Haiti’s annual gross domestic product and employs about two-thirds (66 percent in 2004) of the labor force. However, expansion has been difficult because mountains cover much of the countryside and limit the land available for cultivation. also with the competiveness ... They are losing business....
4. Also the weather, storms have damaged the infurstructure of Haiti and with this earthquake..... more devestation to the agricultural industry.
5. She has a high unemployment rate.... and a very high deficit rate....

Cynthia Merrill Artis Wednesday, May 26th 2010 at 11:34PM

I know poverty isn't a color thing... I spoke of China... Korea...

siebra says,

"I know Bob Marley ought to be turning in his grave"

bobMarley died of brain cancer in his 30s cause he smoked a lot of ganja.

he glorified ganja, he was a paganChristian, he is the cause of much of the silly jamaicaRastaChristianity. if The Creator wills he probably is turning over in death, like a buringRoasting animal at a barbeque.

@ Sis Irma Your prof said it right--- the Rich get richer at the expense of the poor thus the essence of capitalism (which I'm not knocking because caoatalism has afforded me many things that I enjoy today).

@ Sis Cynthia No worries. I understand completely what you have said. I think that basic necessities need to be provided to citizens of a country.
I've heard some of my colleagues who happen to be from some of these countries tell me that its better to come to the West and send money back home to their relatives.

I have a problem with that, but to each his own. My views are totally based on having grown up in the West so I guess I don't understand people who suffer and still smile.

@ Bro. Rob ...
apologizing to me --- yet another miracle. Ha!

I don't know if Marley is roasting like an animal at a BBQ, but I would say his ganga smokin' was a major downfall in his survial. I think Marley could have lived longer than he did if his Ganga smokin' didn't make him feel invincible; he probably would have undergone chemotherapy for his cancer.

robert powell Thursday, May 27th 2010 at 9:42AM

important point jenFad,

I said, "like a buringRoasting animal at a barbeque."----

not what you remarked--but you know you never have to apologize to me--you are my inspirationl

Jen Fad Thursday, May 27th 2010 at 6:01PM

... @ Bro. Rob oops my bad like a burnig roasting animal... Oh no I would never apologize to you so don't hold your breath. Ha!

@ Sister Irma
Let's talk race or religion... It doesn't work here. (((giggling)))

Cynthia Merrill Artis Thursday, May 27th 2010 at 6:22PM

JEN:.... I agree with this ((I've heard some of my colleagues who happen to be from some of these countries tell me that its better to come to the West and send money back home to their relatives.I have a problem with that,))
______________________________ I said the same thing on a previous blog.... ______
And I can imagine those same islanders whom migrated to the states ... rarely go back home to visit..... Some of my mom's best friends are Islanders/Carribean/Jamacian. I have some African friends who are the same way....

(( I don't understand people who suffer and still smile.)) Of course you don't.... WE live in a different time... we live in a rich country.... even through this recession... we are still doing better than alot of other countries..... Girl... I swear I don't think I could have survied when folks were working on farms picking cotton and tobacco.... THIS HEAT... girl I could be very theatrical!!!

It's all good.... Trust me I have plenty stories to tell... But I have found out that seeing is believing... Until you are actually faced with these situations... You can't Imagine it!!
Im considered young when it comes down to segregation.... But visiting the south to visit my grandparents.... I saw some of it... The first time I heard the word "N...." I couldn't believe it.... And once this old white lady saw my baby ... really light skinned... She told me to 'KEEP HIM OUT THE SUN"!! And stupid me... Didn't even know what she meant by that... Until my grandmother told me...

Cynthia Merrill Artis Thursday, May 27th 2010 at 9:38PM

hey... where's every body??? Am I bloggin alone?

Jen Fad Saturday, May 29th 2010 at 1:35PM

Hey sorry sister laughing, you were bloggin all by yourself. I know what you mean about not being able to survive cotten picking. My granny turned 88 years old and she has told me all about it.

"Didn't even know what she meant by that... Until my grandmother told me"...

I was born in the south and even I don't know what that means. Was the lady saying that you should keep him from gettin' sunburned or from gettin' blackened like blackened fish? Please tell me, b/c me mind b curious.

oK NOW HOW DO WE WORK THE COLOR OF THE SKIN INTO THIS EQUASION jEN OR IS DIALOGING A WAY TO LEARN BY WAY OF EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION OR JUST AN OUT AND OUT ATTACK ON SOMEONE?!?

iS DIALOGUE A FORM OF BEING ABLE TO CAUSE UNITY ON A COMMON GROUNDAND THIS ALSO HAS NOTHIGN TO DO WITH REALIGON OR SKIN COLOR OR FINANCIAL SOCIAL STATUS?!?
(SMILE) BEAUTIFUL, UNIFING POST jEN AND MANY THANKS FOR IT (SMILE)

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

nOW jEN TIS IS NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK ONLY IF YOU STILLHAVENO CLEAR IDEA how those with less or either nohtingdoes not causes crime or anything else by skin color...and just like those people in haiti do the same job as a person in America but don't get the same pay is actually what a nurse does,,,that is if the nurse is like my oldest daughter. she is not only a regristered nurse but she is a ward supervisor and her medial specialty in cemotheraphy...

my daughter does the same job as a doctor and I doubt if any nurse that is a ward supervisor with the same exact medical powers over life and death as my daughter does will not only say, but know it is true they do more work than the doctor who only comes in to check the charts along with a female nures if his patient is a she....is this correct in this also does not happen because of skin color or being a better person at the job...it is more social perception or at least this is how i look at this truth...i wish my dughter made the yearly salary as the doctor who she does the work and he gets the social status fo rnot actually doing the job...

you know like the "good mother" out at club meetings while her maid, baby sitter takes over the mother job while she is out putting down the single black mother who is raising her children and the club goers children also...(smile)

CLEAR er NOW...

Once my sociology professor explaind tahe poor this way...the rich would not be rich if they did not find a way to exployit the poor, exampe he gave was. the CEO of a company hires a poor person to do the work his wife will not do because it would enterfere with her club meeings...If this CEO paid the person he hired to take care of his home, cook be his cook, bottle washer and his maid and butler and paid for each different job title how could his wife be able to go to all of those social climing meetings ? or lest say it this way...

The people in Haiti make all of that equipment that the professional base ball playres need...if they recieved say the union pay reqired in merica would thi snot eat into those $$$$millions of the players????

Iraq has all the oil that america could possiably use at least in your life time...but those people in Iraq with all of tht oil and all of that $30 billion from america each month are stillin worst sahpe tham we even the blacks like me as i can not spek for you Jen,...

and guess why this is so..Bush decided that heese people were not happy with ther leader they had duly elected...sis they declare war on us because Bush's poll numbers were at a recomrd low of any persident in our history...

any questions about how people gt poor...

OH, I FORGOT ABOUT THIS NATION CALLED TEH UNITED STATES OF AMERICA THA TIS SO BROKE THEY CAN NOT PAY A COMMINUST COUNTRY...CHINA...AND GUESS IF CHINA CLLED IN THERI LOANS FOR GOING TO MAKE THE IRAQI PEOPLE BETTER OFF WITHOUR SADDAM THEN OH WELL,,,I GUESS THEN WE COULD NOT SAY IT IS BECUSE IT IS A BLACK NATION BECAUSE ALL IN AMERICA WOULD BE MAKING THE SAME LALARYS...EXCEPT AS ALWAYS THOSE 1 %...

NOW ANY MORE CONFUSION ABOUT PROVITY DOES NOT COME FROM THE COLOR OF ONE'S SKIN BUT A VARIETYOF THISGS...ROAM OR ANYOTHER NATION HAS EVER BEEN ABLE TO STAND WHEN THEY WENT BROKE...HEAR THAT AMERICA...SKIN COLOR DOES NOT CAUSE POOR OR CRIMINALS AS MORE CRIMINALS IN POLITICAL POWER WOULD BE INPRISON,,,AM I CORRECT?!? (SMILE)

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM
