The opening of the World Cup has been marred by the death of Nelson Mandela's great-grand daughter in a car crash.

Nelson Mandela will not appear at the opening ceremony of the world cup this afternoon after the death of his great granddaughter in a car accident this morning.

Thirteen-year old Zenani Mandela was one of the former South African president’s nine great grandchildren.

She died in a crash on her way back from a pre-tournament concert in Johannesburg. Just one car was involved and no-one else was injured. South African police say the driver was drunk and has been arrested on suspicion of culpable homicide, or causing death by negligence.

It had been reported that Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie was also in the car at the time, but it later emerged that she was not. Mandela’s absence at the world cup opening ceremony was confirmed by the Nelson Mandela foundation.

Tragic. The nation--and the Mandela family--has suffered so much.

This was to be the nation's moment of triumph.

It shows how the Creator of All has Absolute Supremacy over all things on earth. We can accept His authority--but we also need to mourn a great loss.

It's sad that strange coincidents happen! The driver was drunk that struck and killed my daugther in a car acident, the law allowed him to file bankrupcy and get away with murder. But with God's as the absolute ruler we neve get away with anything. I'm certain that he probably experiences the same type of problems in his family.

Thanks guys for the comments to this blog. I'm sure that Mr. Mandela (Mandiba- his tribal name) would really appreciate the well wishes.

He has fought so hard to have the World Cup come to S. Africa and although its a pity that he was not able to attend the opening ceremony we all can understand the reason why.

May he find comfort during this time of loss. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and the citizens of S. Africa.
