What is it with all these religious posts here lately?
This is BIA, not The Potter's House web site! If you want to post all this religious crap and debate beliefs go to a site specifically meant for that. There are plenty to choose from.
Isn't faith a personal thing between you & your God? What if I were gay and wanted eveyone to convert to homos*xuality? You'd all be screaming to tell me to go to a gay site and post my drivel. The same can and should be said in this case.
Besides, most liberal religions are logically flawed, anyway. And in most cases the followers of these religions are forcing them on to their children -- especially black folks. And that’s just wrong.
I you want to believe in fairy tales, go right ahead as long as it's harmless, but it’s surprising just how much isn’t harmless (albeit sometimes only harmful to the believer, such as trust in tarot/healing by faith, etc.). My grandmother died because she "believed" God had healed her from diabetes b/c the preacher kept insisting that "if you have the faith of a mustard seed ..." If it only harms the believer, and nobody else, then I do not object (much like I don’t object to people snorting cocaine). But if there are aspects to it that are potentially harmful to others, such as proselytizing (especially to youth or people in mentally weakened states such as AA attendees, depressed people, etc.), then I do think that those aspects need correcting.
By contrast, I’ve never had a real beef with Wiccans, who in general tend to not proselytize at all and often refuse children under 18 into their groups. Some do and I don’t like that, but most don’t, and on this I would judge the individuals by their own actions. I still think they’re incorrect and harmful to themselves, but as long as they remain harmful only to themselves (and not in a significant, immediate or health-related manner) then it remains their problem and not something I really object to.
Free-thinkers sometimes argue against religion because it’s morally wrong, but to some extent it’s also because we’re trying to encourage skepticism, rational thinking and the "truth". Real truth. Just because your religion doesn’t do terrible things doesn’t mean we don’t want to show why we think it doesn’t make sense and explain why we think people should think more rationally -- especially about religion. We love the truth. But you don't see me up on a soap box all day trying to convert believers like a lot of you do on this forum.
