How Will California Gay Marriages Impact the Nation?
As we shared with you last week, our friends at the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) have already filed an appeal of the Prop 8 ruling and we expect that appeal to proceed into 2011, and likely land at the U.S. Supreme Court in 2012. Of course, the Prop 8 ruling has sent legal shockwaves from coast to coast, and the ultimate outcome of this case will determine whether marriage will be redefined in our country.
If this decision is upheld, not only will the state laws and constitutional amendments defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman be cast aside, but the federal government will be intentionally denying some children the chance to have both a mom and a dad. As you know, God's design for marriage is for a man and a woman, and 30 years of social research shows us that kids do best when raised in a home with a married mother and father.
To make matters worse, the leaders of California's government are now openly opposing their own state constitution--which they are sworn to uphold and protect. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger filed legal motions on Friday asking the judge to allow same-s*x marriages to begin immediately while the case continues in the courts. That request is currently pending before Judge Walker--the same judge who declared Prop 8 unconstitutional!
