HOMETOWN MEMPHIS LIL EXTRA! NEW VISITING CENTER HONORS ALEX HALEY
Henning, Tennessee
August 13, 2010
Family and friends gathered for a two-day celebration beginning August 13-14, 2010 honoring the grand opening of "The Alex Haley Interpretative Center." The brand new facility is located directly behind the late honorees home on Church Street in Henning, Tennessee. The group gathered in a church/family reunion type meeting with Haley's son and brother as speakers for the opening. The new Interpretive Center has various artifacts and of course his most famous book Roots on display. The center honors the life and times of Alex Haley and various other information about the author's life. The center was post-poned several years because of funding since the cost of it is estimated at 1.2 million dollars. The center's director is looking forward to community and visitors alike to come and be a part of such a unique honor to Haley. Guest appearances for August 14, 2010 will include Ben Vereen who played "Chicken George" from the televison saga of Roots.

Haley's work and search of his geneology was truly awe inspiring. Although I have the DVDs of his most notable work ("Roots"), I find it hard to watch except for the time I viewed it as a small child. It's still painful to watch and I'd just rather keep it in my library perhaps when my son is mature enough will talk to him about the horrors of slavery as a history lesson and then let him see portions of the DVD to give him examples.
