About the Program

Program goal

The goal of all YMIC Foundation, Inc. programs is to expose African American males to the engineering, science and law practices through a variety of activities and events. Through our program year we:

* Provide African American males from 5th grade through 12th with mentoring, and academic support through seminars, summer enrichment, community services, leadership and entrepreneurial programs
* Increase the number of African American males enrolling in four year colleges and universities to major in the engineering, sciences and law.
* Administer educational programs and expose African American males to the underrepresented careers.
* Establish and maintain partnerships and alliances with selected colleges for administering summer enrichment to student members within the underrepresented careers categories.
* Implement funding projects so that YMIC Foundation, Inc. can remain a viable entity.
* Establish and maintain partnerships and alliances with school districts, business and professional groups to administer the YMIC Foundation, Inc. grade appropriate curriculum.
* Provide scholarships to African American males upon graduation who have satisfied the requirements agreed by YMIC Foundation Inc, the parent/guardian and the youth.
* Annually, the YMIC Foundation, Inc. will leverage the previous year through lessons learned and seek better ways at administering the mission.

Activities and events

Activities and events in the program include:

* Mentoring
* Community Service Projects
* Project Management
* Science Fair
* Summer Enrichment Program
* Industry Preparedness
* College Exposure
* Academic Scholarships

Academic scholar groups

YMIC Foundation, Inc. offers four academic scholar groups for students in grades five through twelve. Each one of these scholar groups is aligned with the YMIC Foundation, Inc. mission to prepare, expose and inspire African American males for a future in science, engineering or law. Group activities aim to bridge the gap between academic study and real life, by providing opportunities, projects and challenges that simulate real life activities.

Upon acceptance into the program students will be placed into one of the four grade-appropriate scholar groups.

* Future Stars Scholars - Grades 5th and 6th
* Neptune Scholars - Grades 7th and 8th
* Jupiter Scholars - Grades 9th and 10th
* Saturn Scholars - Grades 11th and 12th

The Future Stars and Neptune scholars programs are designed to increase students’ appreciation for math and science, through hands on projects that demonstrate the fun and challenging side of these subjects.

Jupiter and Saturn scholars will compete in the annual science fair as project teams and will apply project management concepts during their experiences. All projects by the Jupiter and Saturn teams will be sponsored by a stakeholder partner group.

Program administration

YMIC programs will be administered to the youth during the school year, and the summer enrichment period. An annual total of 20 mandatory sessions are delivered during after school programs, or at weekend events. In addition, YMIC Foundation, Inc. sponsors an annual science fair where each student will compete.

Summer retreat

Each year YMIC Foundation, Inc. will host an annual summer retreat at a partnering university. The retreat will focus on activities centering on the science, engineering and law disciplines.

Educational content

Primary content for the program will be delivered through workshops, seminars, networking events by approved volunteers, staff members and sponsors. Additional educational content will be delivered by educators through partnering programs with local school districts, professional organizations and corporations.

Impressive Steve.... this program is in your area... are you thinking about getting involved?

Steve Williams Thursday, September 2nd 2010 at 9:37PM

This a local organization here in West Chester, PA

As of today, I am happy to say I am part of this team. I am currently developing a workshop which is an outreach effort to interest these young men in the field of Computer Science.

Just as importantly, I am assisting in fundraising efforts. Our next event is a Golf Tournament at Whitford Country Club in nearby Exton PA. We are looking for sponsors for this event. This is one of several fundraising events we have planned. Donations can be made by visiting the website or requesting a PDF form from me. The YMIC is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. Additional information may be obtained by contacting me at:

Thank-you for your support.

Cynthia, God has answered my prayers.

Irma, it would be great if you would do that for me, contacting your family about the Golf Tournament. But I only have the flyer for it as a PDF, so I will need an email address for any who are interested. My contact info is above. I can't post a PDF here on this site, and the YMIC does not have it available on their site, perhaps because of lack of resources at the moment. But we are working hard to change that!

Thanks so much Irma for your encouragement! You are right, this is perfect for me!

It would be nice if Brother Jamal would get involved instead of taking his project to Africa. We all know that's not happening.
