The Queen's Chair: Labor Day Is Just NOT A Holiday

Marsha Jones · Monday, September 6th 2010 at 1:23PM · 487 views
Labor Day is NOT just another day off. Many younger generations don't understand that.

It's a salute to unions. And how they changed the whole employment plain. They stood up for those who couldn't fight back former Union Leader Jimmy Hoffa is the first name that comes to mind.

There was a time when Americans worked long hours. Were subjected to crazy conditions like having rats near by and poor ventilation. No running water nor bathrooms. Children as young as five were used as cheap labor. Earned less 25 cents for a full day's work and employers just didn't care if there were hurt, injured, loss a limb, were crippled or died. Profits were all that mattered.

Our economy is now losing the benefits made by unions. Pension plans are quickly vanishing. So are medical benefits. Wages aren't what they used to be. Instead of laying back and enjoying this holiday, you should wonder will history repeat itself in the workplace? I hope not.

Marsha thanks for sharing information about Labor Day.
This info isn't always apparent. Unions work hard, but with so much greed from companies and legalities to keep up their own alms make unions suffer in many cases...to support the real opportunities and perks for union members. Nothing is what is used to be, but we reflect and we hope benefits will get better. Solutions are plausabe...we hope.

You are welcome. Just want people to know that others made GREAT sacrifices so that we could work within better conditions.
