On Sept. 9, 1739, The Bloodiest Slave Rebellion Of The Century Ignited At Stono, South Carolina, Outside Of Charleston.
Twenty Angolans, Led By A Slave Named Cato. Seized Weapons From A Storehouse And Began Marching Toward Florida, Gathering Support From Other Slaves, Along The Way.
Planters Eventually Suppressed The Revolt And Slaughtered The Runaways In A Field Where They Had Been Drinking And Dancing In A Premature Celebration. The Planters Decapitated The Heads Of The Slaves And Set Them On Posts At Each Mile.
Twenty-One White And At Least 44 Blacks Were Killed In The Uprising.
