Hit-and-Run Suspect Held Without Bond 15-year-old victim in critical condition ''PRAY''
ATLANTA, Ga. - Atlanta police say the driver who hit a teenager and then fled the scene of the accident on Tuesday night has turned herself in. The teen police say she hit is hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigators say it happened along South Grand Avenue in southwest Atlanta around 9:30 p.m. They say 15-year-old Chris Elliott was hit by a car while walking with his 18-year-old brother, Jarvis Cooper, and he was thrown nearly 30 feet. Police say the car that hit Elliott came barreling out of nowhere, and the teen heard it and tried to get out of the way. But instead, he was struck, and he suffered severe head injuries.
Paramedics rushed him to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. Elliott was listed in critical condition Wednesday morning. The boy’s mother, Phyllis Cooper, told FOX 5 he was breathing on his own. Police say the teen has multiple facial fractures, head injuries and he lost consciousness.
Police say the driver of the vehicle, 17-year-old Lynette Walls, got into an argument with several children playing in the street after one of the kids shouted for her to slow down in the neighborhood. Investigators say at some point, Walls chased one or more of the children with her car through the front yard of a home on Grand Avenue.
According to police, Walls and one of her passengers were involved in physical alteration with residents of a nearby home later, and they say evidence of the fight was found at the scene. About two hours after the initial fight, Wells’ car was seen on Grand Avenue in the same area.Police say Elliott was standing in the street when witnesses claim the Wells sped toward him and hit him with her vehicle.
Walls turned herself in early Wednesday morning at the Zone 3 Main Precinct. She was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery. Police say they recovered her car in Decatur.
Walls appeared before a judge on Wednesday, and she was ordered held without bond.
Phyllis Cooper told FOX 5 on Wednesday afternoon that she is happy that an arrest was made in the case. She says she doesn't wish anyone ill-will, and that she just wants someone to be held responsible for what has happened to her son.
