NEW ORLEANS -- A gunman shot at a moving car and killed a 2-year-old boy in a parked car shortly after an afternoon foot parade had passed by, New Orleans police said.

Investigators said Jerremy Galmon was shot in the face. He died Sunday at a hospital, according to Officer Garry Flot, a police spokesman.

The shooting was on a Central City block that the Young Men Olympian Junior Benevolent Association's second-line parade had just passed.

"It was about two blocks away from the second line -- there were plenty of police in the area almost immediately after the shooting," Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said.

Investigators found a gun and were investigating whether it was the one that killed Galmon, Flot said.

Alison McCrary, who volunteers with the Louisiana Justice Institute for second-line parades, said she heard eight gunshots.

Flot said witnesses told investigators the gunman got out of a dark blue four-door vehicle, possibly an older model Impala, and got back in after the shooting. Officers saw and chased the car, but it got away on Interstate 10, Serpas said.

Serpas and Mayor Mitch Landrieu urged people to report anything they know about the shooting.

"The criminal justice system will not work if people don't come forward," Landrieu said.
Serpas said, "Somebody knows what happened; somebody's child knows what happened."

You're right D, this is crazy, and I'm not just saying this because it happened south of where I live in the 9th ward. But I hope they find whoever is responsible for this crime. No 2 year old child (or any person for that matter) deserves to die like this.

And the irony is that this happened on a Sunday, right in front of a Methodist church and a Martin Luther King Jr. quote was also painted on a bench at the intersection!!!

Also Allison McCrary is a family friend of mine, and I know she is very disturbed by this story...

Central City is part of Uptown N.O...and the 9th ward is part of Downtown N.O. New Orleans has their share of crime just like Detroit, Chicago, etc. but nothing as violent as this!!!

Ths story should serve as more proof that we must do better...

UPDATE FROM WDSU TV:

NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police have released a sketch of someone they identified as a person of interest in the shooting death of a 2-year-old Sunday.

Jeremy Galmon, 2, was shot in the face after he was caught in the crossfire of a gun battle in Central City, a short distance from a second line parade.

The sketch released Tuesday shows an African-American man, believed to be 23-24 years old. Police said he is between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 1 inches tall, weighs about 140 pounds and has a light brown to medium complexion. His hair is done in short twists, and he has a thin mustache.

He was last seen wearing black pants, a black t-shirt and black shoes. He was armed with a silver handgun with an extended magazine.

Police said they believe the man may have information about the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 504-822-1111.
