What Can We Do to Bridge the Gap of the Disparities in African Americans Choosing Higher Education?
As I thought of how hard hit many people have been by the economic crisis here in the States, I came across a book that got me thinking of my own personal decisions and influences for a college education.
In the book, " African Americans and College Choice", the authour explores specific factors that contribute to a student's predisposition toward higher education, including gender, economics, and high school curriculum, and seeks to bridge the gap in understanding why aspiration does not immediately translate into participation.
As we acknowledge the disparity between the number of African American high school students who aspire toward higher education and the number who actually attend, what are some things that we can do to increase African American students' participation in higher education? I have already acknowledged the finacial factor in my own personal story but what were your own personal influences that steered you or didn't steer you on the path to a college education? Let's talk about it.
