BE AFRAID! BE VERY AFRAID!!! RACE REASSURANCE PLAYS A ROLE in G.O.P. STRATEGY, Rachel Maddow, Oct. 21, 20101

RACHEL MADDOW: One of the unusual, unexplained things about this year's election is the absence of "Macaca' moments. There have been a lot of times when candidates say extreme things about race. But this year they really haven't suffered any negative consequences as they have in past years.

This year, candidates who say offensive things about race not only have not been drummed out of politics, they have won their primaries and stand a good chance of winning the general election.

From last night's Rachel Maddow show. She applies her usual astute analysis with potent clips from off-the-wall candidates who just might be part of our government.

Funny!!

This is an interesting situation.

Right now I am more concerned with how this election will turn out because that has the potential to impact our lives.

I love it~ Maddow does it again! Muslims are probably equally afraid of Williams being a Black guy who would probably shoot or rob them. Williams is a bigot & he should be ashamed as a Black man!

And Rachel Maddow is refuting the myth...YOU GO GIRL!!!

The fact that President Obama was elected has given more people the oportunity to discuss racial problems without causing total conflict. I think that was is a good thing because both sides are able to release a portion of their bottled-up or internalized anger. Black people are making President Obama look good by keeping the peace.

Helen:

Great point! People can be more honest with each other--on all sides. some of the language is sharp and hurtful--and most of the insults are directed at minorities other than African-Americans--but it is still as ignorant as they come.

How does a seante candidate get away with calling the Energy Secretary, whose name is STephen Chu and who happens to be a Nobel Prize winner in physics "Chow Mein"???

Dumb however you look at it!!! And he should be called out for it.

Living in Oklahome, I know first hand about calatoral damage. After the bombing the first report inferred that Arabs did it. So law enforcement used valuable time looking for a truck with Arabs in it, all the while showing Tim McVeigh's picture. I do not want to be calatoral damage. I don't care what clothes they have on.

With people like the shoe bomber, and the truck in times square and lets not forget the black man from Norman Ok., do i here a suggestion that being vigilant is racist? If you are a lady, would you call it bigotry if one pays attention to one's surroundings at night, alone, in a dark area or a mall parking lot?

Richard Kigel Monday, October 25th 2010 at 9:52PM

Right. I recall that Jesse Jackson made the same point several years ago.

I have heard the same sentiments exactly from black friends of mine who do not feel comfortable under those circumstances. Does caution/vigilance equal racism?

On the other hand, there is real racisim out there when innocent people are singled out and face suspicion for no other reason than how they look. That goes for a whole list of miniority groups.

When is it reasonable prudence and when does it became bias? Interesting question.

"ME" I disagree with our having a Black president has caused us to 'talk' more openly about race..."I" say it has caused more resaon to race / ethnic bating which ends up in prejucice...or prejudging without knowing...therefore to me what Juan Williams did should be classified as HATE speech more than any thing else...example,

O'Reilly and Williams were putting NPR down for only having one Black person on their network...

D...U...H or have we seen even one anchor that is Black on FOX...I saw the words come right of O'Reilly's own mouth why his mother FEARED BLACK MALES!!!!!!!!! So all Juan Williams did was forget the color of his skin and for that he will have to suffer the consquences of this major screw up!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (nup)

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM
