Did Anyone Watch CNNs Program "Black Church & Debt?

I watched the episode last nite which aired at 9pm with O"Brien and Pastor DeForest of Somerset, NJ. I found the segment very narrow in its perspective and ironic. Of all the entities or organizations that would be used to explain debt in the Black community, the Black church seemed highly inappropriate especially since I believe some of these Mega Churches and their Prosperity Gospel have been the major culprits.

In my opinion with the cooling of the economic and people out of work equating to lower offerings in the offering plate~ these churches have come up with other gimmicks to get the people's money. I was disappointed that O'Brien didn't do more to push an answer out of the pastor along that line. What about you guys? What are some of your thoughts?

I am not sure about the so called 'mega churches" but there are churches that do have programs addressing financial responsibilty. Mine is one of them.
Actually I was hoping that with this medium we as a collective group could come up with some plan of action to reslove this and other issues. It's not like we needed to be on CNN to know what's happening.

Sisters, I have not gotten the opportunity to watch the CNN program yet, but this story is nothing new to me. The way I see it, this report just follows through on what the majority of black churches have been doing all along... accepting everyone's money.

No offense but think about this..whenever one of us passes a black business to spend our money in the branded establishments what makes us think differently about a church?

Besides are we all not sinners? Where did we fit in before or after we became saved?

Thanks for your comments, but would you mind elaborating on the type of financial programs at your church and how they help the congregation?

I mentioned Mega Churches because Bishop Jakes was on the panel at one point and I'd happened to be listening to his Woman Thou Art Loosed streaming live while watching O'Brien when he had Paul White get up to do the offering.

I thought she was highly inappropraite person to do offering especially since her and her ex husband's church are still under investigation for possible financial misconduct. White kept telling the people not to write their checks yet. What?

The NOI has a financial program but their financial program is aimed towards the progress of their farmlands, schools, diners, medical clinics, etc. I find that the majority of black churches in my community (and I've visited quite a few) main agenda is about using the members money for their own personal use. I don't see nothing much being done as far as opening schools and businesses that our youth can grow and propser from.

@ Sister Siebra,
[I find that the majority of black churches in my community (and I've visited quite a few) main agenda is about using the members money for their own personal use.]

That's what I've also found to be the case, but I'm glad to hear that NOI has financial assistance programs to help in areas that are highly needed in our communities. I wish more churches would follow suit with outreach and mission work in America.

@ Saint,
I think you are certainly on to somehing big in what you have stated... no more sweeping dirt under the rug. While I was listening to the programming last nite, I mentioned that I was also listening to Bishop Jakes Woman Thou Art Loosed Conference streaming live. I was amazed at all the profiting being done ~~ t-shirts for $20, conference dvd series for $75, Woman Thou Art Loosed Bible for $35 and get this~~ Vanessa Bell Armstrong mentioned that she didn't bring enough cds for all the women in the audience. I guess she missed an opportunity to "hock" her cds off on the women? Don't get me wrong, but I like Bishop Jakes but I think that we need to put everthing in perspective.

How much did the church contribute to the ladies' hotel rooms, air plane flight, rental cars, etc? Let's not mention food. One thing I will say that everthing listening to the program CNNs Debt and the Black Church or whatever the title is called~~~ I am happy that I'm putting away money for my son's education. I'm even encouraging community college then transferring into a university. THe show was an eyeopener.

Jen our church (1) own space that is leased at a low cost to members of the community for business,(2) has accounts a t a local black bank,(3) has a preschool to kindergarden school, (4) offers an after school program and during the summer a camp,(5) offer low income housing, (6) allow use of space for community groups for substance meetings, etc. There are more but at the momentI can't think of them.
Our ministers do not receive a salary.

Sister Dorothy,
I'm really happy to hear about what your church organization has made available for the people. It really means so much to me to hear that there are some churches out there that are really doing what's right for its people.
