Hey, what do you know about early church history?

Good Morning Adam!

Early church history--- no more than as early as I can remember as a youth growing up in the country. Things like remembering "the moaning bench" which was part of revival and --baptism taking place in either an actual lake or river of water. Singing and worship was without music in many churches and to me the odd smell of churches because of an old building or country dust I didn't really know why but somewhat there was always an order different than home. Funny, ..as I child I still recall that child's memory.

Otherwise, I don't know much Adam. What's up? Care to tell a me a bit of church history?

Miisrael, as a younger man I studied Classical Languages and by virtue of that, the history of that period. We read from Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Herodotus, Thucydides, Hesiod, Sappho. Aeschylus, the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Old Testament) and of course the Greek New Testament. For Latin we had Cicero, Virgil, Tacitus, Livy, Julius Caesar, Jerome's Vulgate (Latin translation of the Bible) and some Medieval writers. But I don't remember reading Josephus, who wrote at the time of Christ.

Anyway, I also had in interest in the early Church Fathers, but never really studied them in depth. I would like now, to learn about how the Church developed after the writing of the New Testament and the apostolic period. I posted a blog on Clement of Alexandria, just as a starting point, but I think the place to start really may be Eusebius:

"In his Church History or Ecclesiastical History, Eusebius wrote the first surviving history of the Christian Church as a chronologically-ordered account, based on earlier sources, and complete from the period of the Apostles to his own epoch. He also wrote that Matthew composed the Gospel according to the Hebrews. The time scheme correlated the history with the reigns of the Roman Emperors, and the scope was broad. Included were the bishops and other teachers of the Church; Christian relations with the Jews and those deemed heretical; and the Christian martyrs."

Miisrael, the words you wrote above are a perfect reminder. I was ready to quite BIA yesterday, then I thought, let me sleep on it. And I thought who I would miss if I did so. And of course I thought of you. When I logged in this morning, here you are with the message.

So I will post my blogs on the early Church as I learn about it, and they are dedicated to you.

Shucks!!...I'm thankful for the dedication...It's so intriqing how the Spirit works... We find we need each other and in that we find we have a purpose to each other as well.
