The Queen's Chair: What Are You Thankful For?

Marsha Jones · Monday, November 1st 2010 at 3:20PM · 459 views
It's November 1st. Thanksgiving is around the corner. Time is just flying, but God's blessings have given me a lot to be thankful for. There are the obvious things, I'm thankful for. My returning good health, my children, my family, friends, and loved ones. My home and the capacity to still love and forgive those that may have hurt me. A decade or two ago, this list could have had more material possessions on it; I don't know. I know that I've changed. We all do.

For me though, losing my health and suffering a stroke made me so much aware of what disabled folks have to put up with. Perfectly healthy people parking in handicap spaces, people making assumptions about what you are capable of, and how in many cultural perspectives disabled people aren't really seen in novels, movies, or on stage for that matter. My stories now include disabled characters and people of color were always there:they are a part of my literary world.

I am delighted that I can still write stories and create amazing storylines. I was worried for a while that I would lose this gift. If I did; I wondered what I would do.
I can't imagine me doing anything else.

Being creative...that's all I know. That's who I am. I'm learning that LOVE is coming back at me in so many ways: new friends, loved ones from my past and maybe a new love around the corner. I'm just taking it all in stride. Though I'm healing slowly, I'm just happy to still share my life with the people who matter.
