Al Jazeera: How Will Release of Millions of Classified US Documents Impact Int'l Relations?

Jen Fad · Thursday, December 9th 2010 at 5:04AM · 327 views
The world of WikiLeaks: WikiLeaks is the name of probably the world's most famous whistleblowing website. But such is the size and force of what it is doing these days, that it is becoming much more than that. It has triggered a huge debate over what we should and should not know, how that information should be handled, and whether a so-called classified document actually means anything any more.

Wikileaks is about to rock the US government again, as well as potentially governments across the world, with three million new leaked US files. And for the first time it is classified diplomatic material: less-than flattering comments about governments abroad that were meant to remain off-the-record. Not surprisingly, the US has got some big concerns, because the consequences for American interests could be severe.

As the US braces itself for another wiki-leak, what will come from the release of millions more classified US documents? Will it really endanger lives as the US claims, and how will it impact international relations? Joining the programme are Matthew Duss, a national security analyst at the Centre for American Progress, Jason Johnson, a political editor for the Source Magazine and a professor of political science at Hiram College, and Charlie Wolf, a political commentator and radio host.

This is just another assault on the U S and its relationship in the world. Many of the problems we have through out the globe stem from the two faced attitude we have and the lack of sincerity. It is also impacted by the high handed way we take it upon our selves to tell other countries how to treat people and spouting Christianity when we do none of what we preach to others to do.

Yes, I believe that our service men are are in grave danger. That also includes Americans who are not in the military and are working and living abroad. In other countries that are not at war, the atmosphere will change especially with our allies and potential allies.

This will impact the President and the things he is trying to do to fix the mess that he inherited. I hope the President remembers that Bush ignored the fact that the attackers on the World Trade Center were Saudies and not Iraques.

I just returned from Europe last week and I noticed a difference in how we were treated than when I was in Greece and Egypt a few years ago. White Americans were treated differently than Black Americans. We were treated better. They were more receptive. This time, they were more stand-offish and reserved. I dont know whether that was just being Italian and Spanish or our respect in the world had something to do with it. The other time we did not have white people with us and this time we did. That may have had an inpact on the way we were treated.

Where is this guy from and how did he get his hand on such classified information? How secure are we? Just because we, as lay people, know little about what the government is doing and Black Americans know even less, does not mean that we are secure as we are told we are. If we can get the other guy's information, why can they not get ours?

African Americans do not pay enough attention and the white man knows that. That is why he wants to keep us occupied with whether he likes us or not instead of where we stand in the world. When are we going to reaize how much power we have if we pull together. Even his poor supports his rich. Look at us.

You missed my point. Many Black Americans do not listen to what is going on in the world nor do thy consider how that effects them. Remember I said some. If you are talking about the 'American Ideal", and world domination which is what we were up in arms about, then we have a tendency to be an hour late and a dollar short. In the rest of the world, we, black white, grissly or gray, are identified as Americans. We also bare the brunt of how we are viewed in the world.

Many, and I said many, do not have a globel prespective where they are personally concerned. Therefore MANY, tend to ignore what HE does until it personally effects them. Sometimes, it is too late.

The term "White Folks" only refers to those who fit the profile previously identified; afterall the American power structure is make up of those people. How many Black People paid attention to the fact that the people who flew the planes were Saudies and that the US. flew Ben Laudon's family in the US out immediately afterwards? How man know that they are back and live her a citizens? How many look below the surface and see the underlying causes for much of the surface stuff?

If we are such a moral country, why do we have anything to hide? Thank you Jen.

@ Sister Thomasena,

...Where is this guy from and how did he get his hand on such classified information?...

[Apparently Assange is an Australian journalist, publisher, and Internet activist. He has lived in several countries, and has made occasional public appearances to speak about freedom of the press, censorship, and investigative journalism.
Assange founded the WikiLeaks website in 2006, he has been involved in publishing material about extrajudicial killings in Kenya, for which he won the 2009 Amnesty International Media Award. He has also published material about toxic waste dumping in Africa, Church of Scientology manuals, Guantanamo Bay procedures, and banks such as Kaupthing and Julius Baer.
For his work with WikiLeaks, Assange received the 2008 Economist Freedom of Expression Award and the 2010 Sam Adams Award.]

GOOD POST SIS

Jen Fad Friday, December 10th 2010 at 7:16PM

Thanks Sister Siebra and let me also ad how much I believe that we need to read and listen to non American news networks to get a different perspective (rather than the brainwashing political machines owned by Republicans or pro Democratic anchor persons).

Sister Irma,
I used wonder the same thing, but if you think about how posts get missed the answer is simple. People can post up to 15 new things before 15 mins and unless you do what you and I do---go back to see previous blogs---things get missed.

Steve Williams Monday, January 3rd 2011 at 3:57PM

Sister Jen, there are those that either are just trying to be "top blogger" or just constantly whining. There is so much "poor me" and "he hit me first" it's pathetic.

DAVID JOHNSON Monday, January 3rd 2011 at 5:19PM

if your computer is running slow then ,,delete and re start for new info !!
yes look back and go forward ! try to keep up
we run this town ! ! need to up grade ! 2011 is not like 2010

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011 !!

Steve Williams Monday, January 3rd 2011 at 5:26PM

All we need is someone to write a program that searches for key words to find, by process of elimination, the "info".

Steve Williams Monday, January 3rd 2011 at 5:39PM

Maybe 2011 will be the year of the social net automaton. Now that would be a breakthrough.

Thomasena Martin-Johnson Tuesday, January 4th 2011 at 2:36PM

THEY are still in the mode of having someone fix it for us. Thus the whining. What are we going to do for our self? I received a christmas present which was a book called Secrets. The writer says that the secret to success is to be grateful for what you have, think that you have what you want and deserve it, then, more will come. The glass is half full. I will add to this, If you think you can, you can. Shed the slave mentality and release the slave master. His day is done. Release your mind and let it go. DO SOMETHING EVEN IF IT IS WRONG. DON'T VEGITATE.

I was reading this morning and ran into this. According to the James collection of stories that some follow so faithfully, Easu had three Hamitic wives. Wouldnt his off springs, Edomites, be half Hamitic? Two of them were Hittite and one was Ishmaelite.

Steve Williams Tuesday, January 4th 2011 at 3:08PM

Sister Thomasena, I rather regret my comment, which was made in an emotional state. And since this is a blog that's been around a while, and it is sister Jen's, I hope she won't mind me going off topic in another direction. I have found the shortest way to teacher certification here where I live in PA will mean about 2 years to get a second bachelors degree, and I have missed the deadlines to start this Spring. So my question to you is, in your state (as I have found to be the case in Florida) is there a path to get provisional certification while working on one's education courses leading to regular certification?

Jen Fad Tuesday, January 4th 2011 at 5:04PM

By all means, discuss your thoughts.

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

@Jen, how did I manage to miss this great post? lol (smile)
