If we knew the answer, we could begin to devise some kind of solution.

My theory: it is the normal human drive for acceptance and group identity. That leads people who are psychologically dependent on the approval of their own particular group to the false conclusion that their own group is better than other groups. That leads to hatred, intolerance and even suppression of groups that the person sees as opponents.

The "My Group is Better" and "My Way Is Better" meme has been historically devastating.

It leads only to unending cycles of warfare and strife and misery.

As for me, and because I believe that the more inhumane mankind is towards their fellow human kind is in the name of religion...my first choice is religion is where we go to get this reenforcement to hate each other. (nup)
