The Queen's Chair: Who Takes Care Of You?

When you're sick, who does?

Right after the holidays, I got that horrible scratchy throat. The next day, I got a dry cough and had a low grade fever. I was out of medicine and needed some. So I went into mommy panic mode. I had my daughter call a girlfriend to explain my situation. My daughter informed her that I needed cough medicine and a cough suppressant. I also reminded her to let Anne know it wasn't "an emergency". Ever since my stroke a few years ago, a trip to the hospital freaks out my immediate and extended family.

For single parents...singles period, you need to build a support network. We aren't invincible. My daughters waited on me hand and foot for a while. Emergency numbers are on the fridge. They know my medicines I take: they are written down as a back-up. The LOUD dry cough didn't help.

When Anne arrived, the sight of her basket was a wonderful site. She was pleased the girls worked as a team to make sure I was alright. And she double-checked my fever, but I was OK. I knew what I needed.

When you don't feel well, don't be a martyr. Come up with a plan. Call a friend, family member, or friend. If worse comes to worse, go to a hospital, clinic, or after hours clinic. Just get help...quickly.
