FOOD FOR THOUGHT: ARE BACKGROUND CHECKS RACIST?
Is it wrong for a company to use pre-employment criminal background checks to weed out applicants? In some cases, the practice could amount to racism, at least according to Uncle Sam. You heard me right - by pulling someone’s criminal record you may be committing a racist act. The theory is, since certain minority groups have higher rates of criminal conviction, those records cut against them more often than other applicants.
So of course, the answer is to have government level the playing field though a new mandate. The criminality rates are upsetting, yes, but the answer isn’t in forcing employers to ignore the facts. Individuals commit crimes, not groups. Keeping one’s nose clean isn’t dependent on skin color. The real discrimination would be in treating workers not as individuals but faceless members of some race profile.
I welcome all feedback, thank you in advance...
