P.B.S. Pinchback

On January 13th 1873 Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback Relinquished The Office Of Governor, Saying At The Inauguration Of The New Louisiana Governor:

"I now have the honor to formally surrender the office of governor, with the hope that you will administer the government in the interests of all the people [and that] your administration will be as fair toward the class that I represent, as mine has been toward the class represented by you."

Pinchback Was The First Black American To Become Governor Of A U.S. State, As Well As Louisiana's First Nonwhite Governor. He Served In That Position For 35 Days (December 9, 1872 - January 13, 1873).

P.B.S Pinchback Got Into Politics During Reconstruction. He Joined The Republican Party After Serving In The Civil War.

He Was Elected As A Louisiana State Senator And Became The State Senate's President Pro Tempore. In 1871 He Became Acting Lieutenant Governor After The Death Of Oscar Dunn, America's First Elected African American Lieutenant Governor.

In 1872, The Incumbent Republican Governor Henry Clay Warmoth, Was Impeached Near The End Of His Term. Louisiana State Law Required That Warmoth Step Aside Until Convicted Or Cleared Of The Charges. Pinchback, As Lieutenant Governor, Succeeded As Governor. Warmoth Was Not Convicted And The Charges Were Eventually Dropped.

Pinchback Remained In Public Service. He Practiced Law And Served On The Louisiana State Board Of Education Where He Was Instrumental In Establishing Southern University, a Historically Black College, In New Orleans in 1880.

Pinchback Died In Washington, DC In 1921.
