Economics or Racism? Your Thoughts Re: One Charlotte School Holding Snow Make-Up Day On MLK Holiday?

BAd decision. Offensive. The calendar is full of all sorts of days to choose from. Anyone who made THAT particular decision should have expected real anger.

You know that you're my inspiration, but what you have said is the equivalent of someone criticizing a leader of high calibre like Barack Hussein Obama, president of these United States of America.

I must say that I do see your point regarding "oppressed people" using the Holiday as a day of remembrance for to celebrate slaveAmericans' rejection in American History. Moreover, I think once we truly see past slaveAmerican era and concentrate and focus on how the late MLK wanted tolerance, equality, and peace to be themes of his legacy for ALL mankind/ALL God's children then perhaps school districts like CMS will see the importance of the Holiday.

I don't think boycotting school is a good idea after all, King wanted kids to have intergrated education. The kids could still honor Dr. King by using the day to show what he stood for. Perhaps the school could use part of the day to do assembly commemorating MLK or talk about unity and peace. I don't know, but boycotting school will only hurt them, not the school.

You are so right about snow being like Santa Claus in the Carolinas. I spoke to my grandmother in SC and she's all shut in and can't get to the mailbox. She's waiting for someone to come and check it for her. I emailed a friend in NC and the Mecklinburg county schools are on a 2 hour delay. My friend her daughter emailed me pictures of the snowcream they made. So you are right!

It's up to the parents and the students to get signatures on a petition and call for a school board meeting if they really value King Day. The problem is that many Black people depend too, much on the NAACP and Rev. AL to get things done for us. We have our own voice both as individuals and collectively as a group. Real power comes in building coalitions with across ethnic lines like what occurred with the Underground Railroad, the ending of Slavery, the ending of segregation in the South, and the ending of Apartheid in South Africa. Many of us allow things like Race to polarize us with emotion and feelings that we can't think straight... all we see is RED. No one can organize under that type of duress.

I think it shows a sign of disrespect for MLK...after all the man was about peace...

I agree with you on your point. We are by large become an Apathetic people who make a bunch of noise with no real actions to substantiate the noise.It's probably more about economics than anything. I don't believe the school is being Racist, but have used a lack of judgment. CMS Distreict probably see forgoing the King Day as a way of saving money for the district.

Jen, while I don't doubt that parents and students here would be outraged if this was a decision brought in LA...knowing the kind of man MLK was and what he stood for all students should be excused from school...instead of holding school on MLK day how about adding a few extra days to the end of May/June (depending on when school year ends in that state) to make up for time lost?

I can always trust you to keep it on the "real". You are so correct in what you have stated. You ask any given number of Black people to talk about who MLK was to them it would be so BANAL. I thought I'd add that one in there that they woulld put you to sleep with their trivial view of such a complex and deep soulful man. Most of us know him to be for Civil Rights and the one who did the "I Have A Dream" speech but beyond that many can't see his global effect. In my opinion at least of the Black people I know it's just another day off work but instead of it being off because of a White man, it a day off because of a Black man. That's real shallow.

The reason the CMS District will make up the snowday on King Day is because of Apathetic parents. If the CMS had tried to do the same for say a Jewish Holocaust Day or Anne Frank Day, I shutter to wonder what our Jewish sisters and brothers would do?

Nantambu told almost 100 protesters Monday morning outside the Government Center in uptown Charlotte that the city is "a racist bastion" and he urged them to write letters to the CIAA, NCAA and the PGA urging the organizations not to come to Charlotte. Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Cannon and other local leaders said Tuesday evening before the NAACP vote that Nantammbu's claim of racism will not endanger Charlotte's bid to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Cannon, a black Democrat, said he doesn't think Nantambu's statement will scare off any events. "You can look at me, for instance, and know that I got elected citywide not just by African Americans but, obviously, by those that are of other descent," said Cannon. what a shame...but it would be nice if someone would be concerned taht these schools should only have one day / one month a year to teach BIA history in their schools and not be wanting it taugh each school day...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not being pro or con on this matter, only want to say this as one from the state...when it snows in N.C. about less than an inch, schools close....for children who have never seen snow it is like seeing santa claus and school out and birthday all rolled in to one. lol (smile)
