"Queen Of Gospel Song," Died At Age 60, In Evergreen Park, Illinois. Mahalia Jackson Was Gospel Musc's First International Superstar.
Reared In New Orleans, Louisiana In The Early 1900s, Mahalia Jackson Began Singing Gospel In The Church Choir.
In 1945, Her Recording Of "Move On Up A Little Higher," Sold Almost 2 Million Copies And Brought Her Immediate Fame. The Successful Recording Led To Appearances At Carnegie Hall And On "The Ed Sullivan Show," As Well As A European Tour.
Toward The End Of Her Life Jackson Became A Civil Rights Activist And Author. In 1970 She Wrote A Cookbook Titled "Mahalia Jackson Cooks Soul." Two Years Earlier, She Sang At The Funeral Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., A Request He Made Prior To His Death.

I love this dear lady's music even as a young girl growing up in the South and there was an elderly man who shared the same passion of Ms. Jackson's music. When I was older, I gave the best of Mahalia Jackson collection. He played the music so much that it "almost drove his wife to drinking"! The man has passed on but when I speak to his widow she plays Ms. Jackson's music because it brings her comfort and memories of her husband sitting on the lazy boy humming along to her music. Thank you so very much for posting a blog of one of my favorite ole' time gospel music singers!
