Support the Campaign to Honor Civil Rights Pioneer James Farmer with a U.S. Postage Stamp

It’s been nearly 50 years since civil rights pioneer James Farmer organized the Freedom Rides from Washington, D.C., through Fredericksburg, and on to New Orleans. This year the University of Mary Washington and U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) are working together to recognize Dr. Farmer’s lifetime of accomplishments–including his years as a UMW professor – by calling for the issuance of a commemorative U.S. postage stamp in his honor.

Farmer, who was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998, is a member of what many have called the “Big Four” of the civil rights movement. Farmer is the only member of this illustrious group, which also includes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Whitney Young, and Roy Wilkins, who has not yet been honored with a U.S. postage stamp.

You can lend your support to this effort by signing the online petition, which you can access through the link above. Congressman Lewis plans to present the petition to the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee.

Thank you for your help in this important initiative.
