Halle Berry Uses Jim Crow ' One Drop ' Rule of Slavery To Classify Her Dgt As Black

Shouldn't this have been discussed before hand regarding what color Nahla is? Isn't she both White and Black? What about Mixed? Come on Halle & Gabe I sort of expected more than this from you two.

Halle has declared her daughter is black... well at least we know Halle's not confused as far as her daughter's race is concerned. Halle knows that even though Nahla was born to a White father, society will still see her as Black, so it's best the child know it now...

The era of parents and even society deciding for the individual what racial or ethnic group that person should belong to is showing signs of fading away.

The trend among the millenial generation--who are more multi-cultural and multi ethnic than any previous generation in history--is for the individual to decide for himself.

My own two grandkids are being brought up to be proud of the the simple fact that their heritage is biracial. They consider themselves to be BOTH white and black. And who has the authority to contradict that, especially since it is true?

The "one-drop rule" isn't really a rule at all. It is a custom that has stuck in people's minds for several centuries. But that doesn't make it true or legitimate.

One day, when Nahla is old enough to explore her own identity as a human being, she will make her own decision on it as an independent thinker.

I belive that the using Jim Crow Slavery Rules is really pathetic and stooping to a level that I would never imagined a woman of Berry's calibre to do. The fact that she has gone this route lets me know that money doesn't necessary exonerate ignorance when it comes to discussions about Race.

I get what you're saying Jen, however Halle has a point and she knows that we still live in a country that is as racist as they come, and who still continues to make us feel ashamed to be proud of our blackness. I don't think her comment was pathetic at all. I know of many people who I attended college with who were mixed and some people can tell they are mixed, but at the end of the day they have to deal with what it's like to be black in America, not what it's like to be white. In an ideal world, we all want to be treated as human, but this is not the case in America and whoever says otherwise is blind.

I realized we have to deal with people, but I don't think that using Jim Crow Rules are what is needed for Halle's dgt. After all isn't it what the ancestors fought hard to free future generations of? The rule makes no sense to me and if anything I think this would be a time to sit back and wait until the subject comes up when her dgt becomes curious about who and what she is. It's child's play at this point and pure nonsense. What if Nahla wants to embrace the White part of her ancestry and be called White like her father Gabe? THe child is mixed, both Black and White and should be encouraged to love all of who she is.

Gosh!! Bi-Racial.... Half- African American.... Half White, Half Black!!! Interesting..... I must ponder on this one.....

I think it's more of a matter of how Nahla (will) view herself and that comes from how her parents view her and what they are teaching her.... you can't take her and split her down the middle like a chicken.... looking for white meat or the dark meat!

Society and it's expectations and labels of who they feel she should be is going to be the biggest obstacle!

I see your points, but I don't think teaching a child to deny their biracial ancestry is protecting them. The lesson to teach a child is resilience and how to be couragous in a society where people love less because of preconceived stereotypes and predjudices. That's what I'm teaching my son.

Gabe and Halle are feuding for nothing right now and its a HUGE waste of time trying to fight over white meat or dark meat chicken. Halle would have been better off not even having a child if this is what she calls good parenting.

Halle loves her daughter and I don't think she meant any harm in what was said. Halle herself is biracial and is called Black 99.9% of the time because her father is black so why can't she call her daughter black? The people who are outright slamming Halle for what she said regarding her daughter's race need to stop making a mount out of a molehill...

I think adults should learn how to be mature when they pass a certain stage in life and Gabe and Halle have really shown their immaturity.

I like that your grandkids are being encouraged to embrace their biracial ancestry becuase its healthy for them and good parenting without fear for what may or may not happen to them by society. The children in this generation are less stigmatized than people back were back in the day so embracing their mutlicutural ethnicities is something to be proud of.

she's bi-racial...... and that's that! I will say this in my opinion "one drop rule" was used as a stigma against whites who had relations" with blacks!

Mulatto is their father was white and their mother black/maids/servants/slaves.

Personally.... I would not call my child black because of the negativity the word brings... just like I wouldn't call him "Tom" "Boy" "colored" or any term I deem as negative and damaging!

I don't see anything wrong with the word KID.... I think when it comes to the youngns' we have to be careful with the messages we send... Gabe is Canadian and the One Drop RUle isn't something they he would be privy to because Canada wasn't into slavery except for those few who were loyal to England who fled the American Colonies before the American Revolution taking their slaves with them into Canada.

Hopefully this will shed some light on this matter.....

Just for the record and disrespect intended it is my personal belief that most Americans both Black & White have serious Issues when it comes to Race. There are many lessons that we could learn from our Neighbors to the North of us in Canada about Diversity.

I love Halle yes I do, but I truly believe she's got some serious issues.

"I" am not positive if it was William Shakespear who coined the word "kid" but in one of his plays/ stories the way I was to end up with it being read in one of my BIA study classes from our culture point of view in teh story he called the Black children, KID and the adults Canniable...since then I have never used the label of KID. @Jen, what race do you say our president is in...Black American,,,black African or White...and, why do you do this? example, was it society that deemed him to be Black and not a'*****' or colored, ect or was it jim crow taht caused you to define even your own race for you or the rules of society at this time?!?

As, for me, I believe this child should be taken into protective custady for her own long term mental health concerns and to protect her long term self-worth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
