Black History celebration
It also lets them know that they need to investigate for themselves. When they recognize that they have been lied to, then they start to question and search for the truth. They need to know that their legacy is more that being a slave, bought and sold like hay. Even if they are descendents of slaves, that they are survivors, or they would not be here. Those others did not make the crossing.
The word HISTORY means that it is a story from the past so what else will we talk about, something that hasn't happened yet? If it hasn't happened yet, it does not exist. There is so much information that our children do not know and it is IMPORTANT for them to know it if knowing what the white man has decided that they should know is important. It is our place to teach them so how else will we do that?
Foundations are build one brick at a time. The information bank is filled one bit of information at a time. Viewing the wealth of information that the youth of today does not know, we should be horrified by the injustice the educational system has visited upon the young people of today of any color. It is just as inportant for all children regardless of race creed or color, to know the truth.

In my school we are doing our part. Every student in the class has researched and written a presentation on an African-American historical figure to present to the entire school at our assembly.
So far, they have done some amazing work. Everybody has learned from it.
I have my class reading a biography of Frederick Douglass this month so they can get into the details of his amazing and inspiring life story.
I think the parents appreciate it most of all. I think everybody knows they are getting information they may not receive anywhere else.
I agree--Black History is a valuable part of American History. Nobody can understand the history of our nation without understanding the contributions of AFrican-Americans.
