Did Anyone Else Hear That Serena Williams Was Hospitalized After the Oscar's Party for a Blot Clot in Lungs?

Hours after she dazzled the red carpet at the Vanity Fair Oscars party, Serena Williams was in a Los Angeles hospital receiving emergency treatment for a blood clot in her lungs.

According to People magazine, Serena suffered a pulmonary embolism last week and was seeing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for the problem. It was discovered after she returned from New York for doctor's appointments relating to her foot issues.

"Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars [Medical Center] for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation," a representative for Williams, Nicole Chabot, told the magazine.

Chabot said doctors are continuing to monitor the situation.

Earlier in the week, Serena said she had been targeting the French Open as her return to tennis. Whether or not this health scare changes her plans is unknown. For now, Serena has more important issues to deal with than the timetable of her return to the court. Getting her health in order is priority one. Tennis, for now, can wait.

Yes,Jen--I saw this on the news.

I am a huge fan of Serena and Venus and I wish her well.

What do you know about pulmonary embolisms? How serious is it?

It can be life threatening if it stops blood flow to the lungs. It sounds like Williams had a small blood clot which can managed with blood thinners like warfarin to dissolve it.

I hope she gets well soon...

Me, too. I hope she will take it easy as well. Blood clots are no joke.

There is a guy from New Orleans who does the local news here and he lost his wife to a pulmonary embolism over 7 years ago. I was watching a special report he did on it and I was shocked...I had no idea that blood clots can be that serious...

It's really a life threatening condition that happens all within a matter of less than 3 minutes. I'm deeply affected today, because after working on Friday, I learned that one of my patients passed away from the same thing. He'd been through the worst of his hospital stay and was so much better; he was awaiting a Dialysis Spot in the community. He had even been given a pass to go home for a couple hours on weekends.

To die from a blood clot really makes no sense to his wife's mind because he'd already been through the worst of sickness. He was up walking around... doing well, but apparently he had a clot and underwent a procedute to remove it. Had gone through it with flying colors but the apparently another clot formed and moved to his lungs ... stopped his breathing. It's really hard for his wife. My heartfelt prayers go out to them all. I really hope Serena underwent a IVC (Inferior Vena Cava Filter) which is a filter which will catch moving clots before they get to the lungs. I should think she has had this procedure. My best to her.

My best to her too...I just learned that one of our sisters in the NOI in Chicago Sister Michelle is in ICU after suffering from a blood clot in her lungs. I ask everyone to please keep her in your prayers and your hearts.

I saw your blog about Sister Michelle and my heartfelt prayers go out to her. I'll remember her in my prayer time.
