UPDATE: Virgil Peck

Can you believe that it's been more than two weeks since Kansas Republican Representative Vigil Peck said that shooting immigrants like wild hogs from helicopters was a solution to our immigration problem — and that he still has his job? But what's even more unbelievable is that days after the remark, three Latino Republican members of the House of Representatives stood shoulder to shoulder with Peck on national television to accept his apology.1 After the press conference, Rep. Mario Goico told a reporter that: "Rep. Peck is a colleague and he usually portrays himself as a very dignified individual …

I think it was a very bad joke.” That’s embarrassing. We expect Latino leaders to stand up for us when we’re being attacked, not to be used as political cover to defend outlandish and offensive comments. It’s why we’ve recorded an ad for Spanish radio stations in Kansas that demands that Representatives Goico, Gonzalez, and Mesa call for the resignation of Virgil Peck. We want the community Peck attacked to hear how Latino leaders are standing behind him.

As of today, over 56,000 people from Kansas and around the country have signed our petition demanding that Rep. Peck resign. Unfortunately, Republican leaders in Kansas have refused to hold Rep. Peck accountable for his comments, and they have enlisted three Latino representatives from their party to try to change the subject. There’s a Spanish dicho – proverb – that says, “Dime con quién andas, y te diré quién eres” or "Tell me who you run with, and I’ll tell you who you are.” Today, that dicho couldn’t be truer of Representatives Goico, Gonzalez, and Mesa. That’s why we need your help in demanding that they call for Rep. Peck’s resignation. Listen to our ad and then click here to contribute $3 to help us keep the ad on air. Send a message to the Kansas Republican leaders that Rep. Peck’s comments have not been forgotten, nor forgiven.

Thanks y ¡adelante!

What Peck said was unethical and no laughing matter. He needs to publicly apologize and do 100 hours of community service in the Hispanic community.
