I love Sade and her music! Folasade (FOL ah shaw day) is a traditional Yoruba name and means 'Honor earns a crown'. It is often shortened to Sade. Its such a beautifully pronouned name with meaning and surely befitting for Ms. Adu!

I concur with this history in that it explains why many parents after they give birth will not officially announce the name of their children until the 8th day, women not being able to go to church until after 40 days from giving birth, circumcism of male children, forbidding consumption of pork products,ect... Some still observe the marriage rites of laying out a white sheet for when the husband and wife come together for the first time to observe whether the bride was a virgin at the time of consumation.

The sad fact of the matter is that many of the current descendents have no idea why they observe Jewish custom. They just think its something that they observe related to Christianity after converting or leaving the more primordial / so called 'primitive' religions (which I don't believe were primitive) of their ancestors. I guess in a way they have also suffered a portion of losing their history, too. Thanks for the information. I'll save it and add it to my history folders. Do you have anything on Yoruba people?
