STEPHEN COLBERT TO FEDERAL ELECTION COMMISSION: "I DON'T WANT TO BE CHUMP WITHOUT UNLIMITED CORPORATE CASH."

Richard Kigel · Saturday, May 14th 2011 at 7:59PM · 1058 views
Stephen Colbert doesn't "want to be the one chump" without any unlimited corporate money going to his political action committee. That's why he showed up the the Federal Election Commission building in D.C. to formally request an advisory opinion on behalf of "Colbert Super PAC," a proposed independent expenditure only committee able to accept unlimited corporate, individual, political committee and labor contributions.

Accepting unlimited funding is "a right as described by the Citizens United case," Colbert said in response to a question from Politico's Ken Vogel. "I believe the Citizens United decision was the right one, there should be unlimited corporate money, and I want some of it. I don't want to be the one chump who doesn't have any."

Colbert said he expected the FEC to take his request seriously.

"I'm making an actual request. I want to find out whether I actually have to list Viacom and the fact that I have a show as a gift in-kind," Colbert said. "And if I don't, I can't wait to use the resources of my show."

After passing through security to deliver his letter along with his lawyer, Colbert delivered a speech before hundreds of fans gathered outside the FEC building as FBI employees watched from the windows of the J. Edgar Hoover Building across the street.

"As we stand here on this historic site, where 250 years ago today George Washington filed his papers to form his independent expenditures non-connected political action committee, we are also standing at an American crossroads -- not to be confused with American Crossroads, the name of Karl Rove's 'Super PAC," Colbert told the crowd. "I mean a metaphorical crossroads, because the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United has proved that unlimited corporate money equals free speech. But by the transitive property of elections, does it not also follow that no corporate money equals silence?"

"I want to form Colbert Super PAC for all the PAC-less Americans, to give you a voice in the form of my voice," Colbert said.

Colbert told the crowd he'd be offering handshakes at $1 a pop and collected fists full of cash as he darted into an awaiting SUV.

Good to see him shine a light on the absurdity of Citizens United.

That's right! Now that's an ongoing investigation that will take months to unfold.

A slow drip drip drip of Republican amorality and ethics lapses--if not downright illiegality !

Irma:

AWESOME!!!

I am deeply deeply touched.

And just for that, I would love for you to check the nexrt blog I am about to post.

There was a wonderful story in today's NY Times about a Texas woman, now 73, went back to her college to finish her degree. She started there in 1956 as the only black person on campus and was harrassed unmercifully during her time there.

When she returned 55 years later, the college was one third black and she was totally welcomed on campus. She was able to enjoy finishing her degree requirements.

It is an amazing story. As you know, I LOVE those kinds of story for what it says about the resilience, courage, determination, resourcefulness of the African-American people.

I am going to post it now!!!

It is quite an honor for me to be mentioned in the same sentence as Elynor and Anita--and especially because it comes from YOU. And don't forget Professor Gaddy and Leshell and her Black Scholars Index.

And Siebra too. She and her beautiful butterfly presence, in my opinion, always presents a positive supporting picture.

Yes, and I do miss Mozell too!!!

aT LEAST "I" must say I have been fully educated on that Supreme Court's ruling now thanks to Colbert.lol, and that lol is serious (smile)

and, Rich someone must take the reigns as our politicians continue to try and leave law making in D.C. ahead ot arrest warrents...example, Senater Ensign still has that IRS investigation going as filed by those Christian minister's viewers of R.M. for their usning living at C Street as a church to cheat the taxes money paid to them for their rent payments while in D.C. (smile)

...and, I am sure the only democrat in this investigation (the one who help up the health care bill on the abortion isue and resigned shortly after the investigation was started) must be very, very worried righ tnow as it seem Ensign's resignation has already not done him any good...these Democrats have finally gotten a back bone and I can not stop thnaking the Unions as I still believe they have brought all of this back bone about in D.C to stand up to the lobby money and stop being the bset congress tha tmoney can buy for so long...

"VOTERS REMORSE' has hit home. (otfl) (smile)

oh, and Rich Colbert and Stewart's D.C progarm recieving just one emmy nominations not 4 emmies can't be a good sign for the right-wingers either., looooooooooooooooooooool...
