President Obama, stop the deportations of students today

Huge news: Democrats in Congress have now joined in calling on President Obama to use his executive authority to stop the deportation of youth eligible under the DREAM Act!1

This campaign is really picking up steam.

So far more than 20,000 of us have signed the petition calling on Obama to stop these deportations. These students have worked hard to get an education and don't deserve to be ripped away from the only homes they have ever known. The consequences of deportation would be disastrous for them and thier families.

Can you help us double our signatures and get to 40,000 before we deliver the petitions to the White House ? We're organizing a major event to have these young people who're facing deportation speak out directly to the White House and Congress. Im one of many companies that will be organizing events for the Presidential Campaign for President Obama for the 2011-2012 election. Im aware of the Dream Act but if they are over here illegally, they really should be deported. Their parents are at fault for their arising fate. I strongly believe in education for everyone but you have to be aware that by them being deported, it makes more financial age and jobs availabl for American born citizens. I am in agreement with Antoinette. I do feel for the children but their parents did break the law. By passing this is rewarding the parents with breaking the law. I have witnessed people having their family members come to the US for free healthcare, education, housing etc. Who do you think is picking up the tap(the bill). I am and every other taxpayer. I don't mind helping ayone but I am not taking from my own form someone else. Money spent teaching non citizens could be used for our own children.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation out about Immigration. I really hope that as African Americans we can sort out the facts of what is true and what is false instead of allowing media and politicians to continue to conquer and divide us in this nation. The fact is Immigrants provides millions if not billions of dollars in revenue to the IRS for which many of them never collect. The govt. knows this, but I wonder what they do with those dollars. Oh let me guess... fund wars in order to keep making money and giving govt. contracts to their buddies. Hmmmm....

I for one that have witnessed what illegal immigration has cost our country. Yes, they do pay taxes. However, they also receive services(housing, education, medical care) that don't equate to taxes they do pay. Prior to by downsizing my career path , I worked in low income housing( I still voulunteer) . I know first hand illegals receiving housing and other services with no documentation . This and other services need to go to legal citizens.
Some of those dollars the government collects goes to food stamps, low income housing, SSI payments to people that don't work or haven't worked, extended unemployment benefits...and yes to wars.
I'd rather see our country focus on the needs of our own children and people. Currently school budgets are pushed to the limit and it's hard to imagine we are concerned about educationg children that are in this country illegally.

While I can empathize with what you're saying, the research has shown that the economic benefits of undocumeted outweigh the costs of them being here; however, I realize that most people are going to stick to what they want to believe (for unselfish and for selfish reasons) so all I can do is put the information out there for people to know the facts about what's true and what's false.

I believe that we are all connected in the universe and that showing compassion for humanity irrespective of their immigration status or ethnicity is the right thing to do. The fact is, as Black people we are rarely concerned about anyone except ourselves and will hardly reach across the aisle to help anyone else except when we join in this "false unity" against White people when they do something against one of our own. It's sad to me. In closing, I do hope that you will continue to add your contributions to this issue in the future.

@Jen Noone divides the race except the race. This is not a debate on African Americans sticking together and not being divided..that is a choice amongst themselves. I still stand firm on deportation on any immigrant that is over here illegally...lets use all fairness in this. Im studying International Business and 40 percent of business in the United States are owned and operated by non American born people. I believe in building a stronger America by providing education and housing to those have earned it by birthright. We can debate all day about being fair, but the next time you visit your local store or supermarket, take a look at the employees and owners. If you are so concerned about African Americans being divided by the media etc., blog about the effort the government is making to ensure African Americans continue their education. Again I say deport them. Happy Memorial Day!

I was going to reference two studies from California and Texas, two states that have really been affected by illegal imigration. But, I am not going to even go there. I have witnessed an illegal(undocumented) mother with children get housing while we have legal mothers with children in shelters. I have witnessed dollars being sent to Mexico. I didn't get this from a research report, I saw it. I put the paperwork through for the housing. I see it when I tutor at a local elementary school.
While we debate, discuss about people that are not even citizens and have broken the law.....we have some of our people still sharecropping and living in housing not fit for a dog. I rather spend my time, energy, money helping my brothers/sisters in my community .
Personally, I would be ticked off if I came home one day and found someone in my home uninvited and demanding I treat them as family.

I hear you ladies and I do hope that we can continue to talk opening and honestly. The fact of the matter is that America can not afford and will not deport every single person who may have overstayed their visas, came across the borders without proper authorization, or who may have not returned home after a student visa expired. There needs to be Comprehensive Immigration Reform of the System that is broken (over 10 years backlog of applications) which is one of many reasons people resort to tactics that may not be legal. President Obama and many of our elected officials realize this, but the issue is just how do we resolve this. Do we do an amnesty of sorts or do we impose a fine for those who are here without proper authorization so that they can begin to right the wrong of their immigration status?

American and this birthright citizenship issue would apply to children of undocumented/illegal who were born in this country if the case be for rights for birthright citizens. We are a nations of immigrants and that is simply what makes America one of many great countries in the world. People from various countries in the world are actively recruited to come here to help the American economy thrive and without them there would be a serious deficit of brain power. We can talk all day every day about the individual cases of people abusing the system, but the fact will still remain that Immigrants add tremendously to the American economy. Hopefully we can agree to disagree on this matter respectfully. It is my desire to see Illegal/Undocumented Immigrants come out of the shadows so that they can have a path to citizenship. It's the right thing to do.

Interesting turn of events indeed and I have no real solution for how to beging to solve the woes of Prisons in Cali. Do you? Mexico not taking their own citizens is laughable at best!

I will stick to my talking points regarding what I do know and have been reading about for some time is the need for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. We as a nation have to come to some sort of compromise on how we can lessen the backlog of cases in Federal Immigration Courts as well as we must lessen the unnecessary red tape of Immigrating to the United States.

I've had the opportunity to review the Canadian Immigration Policies and theirs seem to be the fairest and friendliest yet. People hardly ever need a lawyer and when an applicant is denied admission on one program, they are people are allowed to choose a different Immigration program as opposed to the United
which once a application is denied, that individual has to leave the country. There is so much room for improvement.

Don't get me started on that soapbox. I think you're right is that we have the internet at our fingertips to search out the facts. I guess most people are too, busy as usual so the media becomes their "bible". I wonder how many people were "brainwashed" by Lou Dobbs when he was with CNN? You're right about the dangerously toxic and low paying jobs that some of these immigrants take on... no Black American would dare
work them, because it would feel like Slavery all over again.

Regarding Canada, especially Ontario and British Columbia... the taxes are too, darn much so that's why they are able to do more regarding public safety! With these dag gone Republicans and their million and billion dollar tax breaks, what can we do about safety and a whole a lot of other issues? It's a two edged sword that the (fast disappearing) Middle Class continues to bear the burden of taking care of the Nation. I think I'll quit my job and see if I can have the Govt. to assist me. (Lol)

Hey you're right again! Quitting one's job is not an option in this horrible economy, eh? Besides I have too, many bills to pay and what the Govt. would offer would be so below my standard of living. Yes, I studied Spanish in high school as well as French. I was much better in Spanish though and it does come back to me when I hear people speaking it. My son will be enrolling this Fall in a language program for 1 st grade.

I was watching GPS with Fareed Zakaria (I love his show) when he was given tips on how to survive in a Global world; learning a second language was suggested as a plus. I think I need to give my son any necessary tools that he needs to survive in this competitive market. As for the Immigrants (undocumented/ illegal), I do hope that their will be some type of path for citizenship as well as I hope the D.R.E.A.M Act will do great things for them once its passed. I know in my heart of hearts that investing in the children is the future irrespective of whether their parents' citizenship status.

That's so true, learning a second or multiple languages comes naturally for children when they are young is a fact. People like to make much to do about nothing most times is what I think. My son's teacher didn't recommend him to take a second language, but she didn't have the final decision (that was mine). He's moving to a new school to learn French because I'm his first teacher.

As far as the finances for education for A-L-L ethnic groups, I believe that's a step in the right direction. Surely we can all deduce from logical reasoning that people who are actively engaged in the educational process and better of themselves are a worthwhile economic investment. I hope that more States will follow in Cali's footstep in the right direction rather than in Arizona, Alabama, and Georgia's on Immigration Matters. Have you read my blog on that? If not, please read or google the mess that Alabama has gotten into.
