My parents attended one of Gil's concerts in New Orleans before they converted to Islam in the '70s...and they still have all of his albums in their home...Gil was the epitome of "keeping it real" long before hip-hop thought about it...

I never heard of this man before this morning, but after reading this blog, it appears that he was indeed a true "trailblazer" in his craft. May his soul rest in peace.

well jenFad,

I and many of us folk heard THE Man, gilScottHeron----

and I am upset that some would associate rap and hippity hoppity NONSENSE with THE Man

I believe he was the ANTITHESIS of this slavery Nob(gils' word)
---hip/rap2011rap, gangster rap and hippityhoppity are TELEVISED.

----prison and addiction can be TELEVISED

----ghettos can be TELEVISED

So I believe that rap, gangster rap and hippityhoppity, etc. was not what this cultural figure meant by

-- THE REVOLUTION will NOT be TELEVISED

THE Man said,

"You will not be able to stay home, brother.
You will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out.
You will not be able to lose yourself on skag and skip"

Definition of SKAG--- slang : heroin
Definition of SKIP-----: hop, dance, bob, trip, bounce, caper, prance, cavort, frisk, gambol, miss out, omit, leave out, overlook, pass over, eschew, forego, delete, block

I say NO TO THE FOOLISHNESS of Comparing His part of Revolution to 2011 NONESENSE!

gilScott began at a time of GREAT CHANGE in the africanAmerican experience

--he was a voice that Tried to say NO to intoxicants and NO to dancing(hipHop); as did the other Revolutionaries of his time, the Family of Elijah Muhammad.

What cannot be televised, 1971-2011?

is the change in the mind of the unKnowledgeable, the unScholastic, the unDisciplined, the old to knowledgeable to scholastic to Truth and finally to Dignity being Developed

and the Force that GAVE us President Baraka Hussein Obama 2008---was not TELEVISED---it just was there.
