Home School Heartbeat: The Virtue of Flexibility

Do you ever feel like you have so many things to do that it's impossible to accomplish them all? This week on Homeschool Heartbeat Mike Smith hosts Denise Mira, who encourages homeschooling parents that it is possible to do what needs to be done.

Mike Smith:
My guest this week is Denise Mira, popular conference speaker and author of No Ordinary Child: Unlocking the Leader within Your Child. She has five sons and has been homeschooling for over 20 years. Denise, thanks so much for being with us today!

Denise Mira:
It’s my pleasure, Mike.

Mike:
Denise, homeschooling is such a big job! What’s your one best tip for homeschooling parents trying to juggle homeschool, and soccer, and unexpected surprises?

Denise:
Be flexible! Homeschooling allows us the great privilege of flexibility, Mike. It’s priceless—it’s freedom! We aren’t held hostage by the ball and chain of the system of formal education, with its unreasonable demands.

We decide what’s important to us—which determines our goals academically, socially, and recreationally. We then set our priorities, devising the practical plan for our day. We aren’t chained to the plan—the plan is there to serve us. When unexpected surprises or opportunities pop up in our homeschooling, we’re free to jump to another track temporarily as it suits us, but we have our plan to return to after the detour we took.

Mike:
Well thanks, Denise! We look forward to hearing more next time from you on how to persevere in homeschooling. Until then, I’m Mike Smith.
